United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Services Agricultural Statistics Board Statistical Bulletin Number 909 Milk Final Estimates 1988-92 Milk: Final estimates for 1988-92. Agricultural Statistics Board, National Agricultural Statistics Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Statistical Bulletin No. 909. Abstract This publication presents final milk production estimates, made by the Agricultural Statistics Board for the period 1988-92 including some revisions. The report continues the official series published in Statistical Bulletin No. 802 issued February 1990. This series includes monthly and quarterly estimates of milk cows, production per cow, and total milk production as well as annual estimates of the number of operations with milk cows, disposition, and income. Estimates contained in this publication provide a historic record and benchmark for current estimates. Introduction Milk estimates were published on a current basis during 1988-92 in monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. Primary data used in preparing milk estimates were obtained using sample surveys of producers. Individual States maintain a list of all known milk producers and information on the size of their herd. States use all known sources of milk producers to help assure that these lists are as complete as possible. Lists of milk producers are updated annually in each State prior to sampling. Generally all large producers and a sample of small producers are included in the survey. Questionnaires are mailed to producers near the end of the month to obtain data for the first day of the month. Additional reports are obtained by telephone, as needed, to supplement the mail response. Since all operations with dairy animals are not included in the sample, survey estimates are subject to sampling variability. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omissions, duplications, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. The effects of these errors cannot be measured directly. They are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and through a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. State offices prepare these estimates using survey indications, historic trends, and any available administrative data. Individual State estimates are reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board for reasonableness. Data from Federal Milk Market Orders and receipts of milk by plants and dairy product manufacturers are used as a check against the estimates. Revisions were made only after a thorough review of the original data, with consideration given to all additional information now available, including the 1992 Census of Agriculture. At the national level, revisions to estimates of annual milk production ranged from one-tenth to one-half percent. For information call (202) 720-4447. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.
