Overview This report for 1993 continues the series of annual Field Crops Summaries issued by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) containing on-farm agricultural chemical use statistics. The data presented in this report are part of the data series on chemical use funded through the Water Quality Initiative. The Water Quality Initiative is a multi-agency program designed to provide information for farmers, ranchers, and foresters to address on-farm and off-farm environmental issues. In the past, there has been an inadequate amount of farm level data to determine the magnitude of water quality problems or to permit an assessment of alternatives for farmers and other affected parties. This report and other agricultural chemical reports help fill the needs of analysts evaluating the complex environmental issues of the 1990's. NASS is responsible for collecting on-farm agricultural chemical use information to support the evaluation of water quality and food safety issues. The Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts research on the impact of alternative pesticide regulations, policies, and practices. This report includes farm use of fertilizers and pesticides during 1993 on corn, cotton, potatoes, soybeans, and wheat. This report also includes data on target pest by pesticide active ingredient for fall potatoes, only. Intentions are to provide this type of information on other crops in the future. The use of trade names in this publication is for information only and should not be construed as a recommendation by NASS. The table below shows survey coverage for 1992 and 1993 by crop. In it are the number of States surveyed, the number of reports summarized, and the percent of the U.S. crop acres accounted for in the surveyed States. Spr. : 4 309 93 4 319 94 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Survey Procedures The information presented in this publication is a result of data compiled from sample surveys conducted during the 1993 crop year. Chemical use data were collected on winter wheat beginning in late May, 1993, while data collection for the other crops began in late July 1993. Generally data were obtained late in the growing season or after the farm operator indicated planned applications were completed. A random sample of fields was selected for each crop so that the probability of selecting a particular field was directly proportional to the total acres planted to that crop. Thus, each acre planted to a crop had exactly the same chance of selection. For winter wheat, the selection was based on acres standing for harvest rather than acres planted. Sample fields were selected using information obtained through two surveys of farm operators conducted earlier in the year. The survey of winter wheat acreage was conducted in March. For other crops, farm operators within small areas of land, called segments, were surveyed throughout the country in June to determine crops planted. This segment information served as the basis for sample field selection. Operators of the sample fields were personally interviewed to obtain information on chemical applications made to those selected fields. The survey instrument obtained chemical application data by product name or trade name. A thorough review compared reported data with manufacturer's label recommendations and with data from other farm operators using the same product. Following this review, product information was converted to an active ingredient level, which was the basis for the chemical usage estimates in this publication. Highlights Corn producers in the major producing States applied nitrogen fertilizer to 97 percent of the acreage planted while phosphate and potash were put on 82 and 69 percent of the acreage. Herbicides were applied to 97 percent of the crop acres and insecticides were used on 29 percent of the acreage. Atrazine was the most used herbicide with 69 percent of the reported acreage being treated. Cotton growers in the six major States surveyed applied nitrogen to 85 percent of the 1993 acreage planted. Phosphate went on 54 percent of the upland cotton while 36 percent of the major States acreage received potash. Pesticide usage was widespread in the six States. Herbicides were used on 91 percent of the cotton and insecticides on 65 percent. Also, 63 percent of the acreage was treated with other chemicals. Fungicides were only used on 6 percent of planted acres. Nearly all of the 1993 fall planted potato crop in the 11 States surveyed, received at least one application of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. Potash was applied to 91 percent of the fall crop. Herbicides were used on 83 percent of the 11 State acreage while insecticides were applied to 88 percent. Fungicides went on 76 percent of the acres and other chemicals were applied to 53 percent of the acreage. Soybean growers in the sixteen major producing States surveyed used nitrogen fertilizer on 14 percent of the acreage, phosphate on 21 percent and potash on 25 percent of the acreage planted. Herbicides were applied to 97 percent of the acreage. Winter Wheat producers applied nitrogen fertilizer to 86 percent of the winter wheat harvested acres in the 13 surveyed States. About half the harvested area received phosphate fertilizer and potash was used on 15 percent of the 13 State area. All surveyed States treated at least a portion of the harvested area with herbicides and 2,4-D again was the most widely used in area applied and quantity. Other Spring Wheat fertilizer applications in the four surveyed States averaged 87, 80, and 23 percent of the acreage for nitrogen, phosphate, and potash respectively. Herbicides were widely used in all States, with 2,4-D and MCPA most prevalent. Insecticide and fungicide use was limited. Corn Nitrogen was applied to 97 percent of the total 1993 corn acreage in the States surveyed. All of the major producing States included in the survey had 82 percent or more of their acreage treated with nitrogen. Growers used an average of 1.7 treatments per acre and used average of 73 pounds per treatment. In the States surveyed 82 percent of the corn acreage received phosphate fertilizer. Potash fertilizer was applied to 69 percent of the acreage. Herbicides were applied to 97 percent of the total corn acreage in the survey, while insecticides were used on only 29 percent of the acreage. Atrazine was the most used herbicide with 69 percent of the reported acreage being treated. Atrazine was applied at a rate of 1.02 pounds per acre on average. Metolachlor and alachlor were the next two most widely used herbicides and they were applied to 32 and 24 percent of the reported acreage, respectively. Chlorpyrifos and terbufos were the most used insecticides with each applied to 8 percent of the acreage. The following U.S. map shows the number of usable reports by State in the 1993 survey. These 16 States accounted for 65.7 million acres and 89.6 percent of the total corn acres planted in the U.S. in 1993. The accompanying bar chart shows the top 5 active ingredients applied in 1993 with comparisons for the previous two years. Upland Cotton Nitrogen fertilizer was applied on 85 percent of the Upland cotton acreage during 1993, a 5 percent increase from 1992. In the six States surveyed, Texas producers treated slightly more than three-fourths of the planted area, while Arizona and California producers treated 98 percent of their acreage. Phosphate applications increased 6 percent from the previous year, to 54 percent of the planted acres. Arkansas treated the highest percentage at 76 percent, and the least was in California with one-third of the acres receiving applications. Thirty-six percent of the Upland cotton planted area was treated with potash, 2 percent less than the previous year. The Delta States (Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi) continue to be the largest users of potash, with 74 percent of Arkansas acreage being treated, while California producers treated only 6 percent of the acreage. Herbicides were applied to 91 percent of the Upland cotton acreage in 1993, up 3 percent from 1992. Insecticides were applied to 65 percent, and 63 percent of the acreage was treated with other chemicals. Texas' large increase in other chemicals was mainly due to a 26 percent increase in Paraquat. The following U.S. map shows the number of usable reports by State included in the 1993 survey. These States planted 10.1 million acres of Upland cotton, representing 76 percent of the total U.S. acreage planted to the crop in 1993. The bar chart shows the top 5 active ingredients applied in 1993 compared with the previous two years. Fall Season Potatoes Commercial fertilizers were used on nearly all potato acres in 1993. Herbicides covered 83 percent of potato acreage, insecticides were used on 88 percent, fungicides went on 76 percent, and other chemicals were applied to 53 percent of the acreage. Nitrogen and phosphate were applied to virtually all fall season potato acres in the 11 States surveyed in 1993. Potash was used on 91 percent of the acreage nationally, with lower use in Western States where the compound tends to be more naturally occurring. Farmers applied 206 pounds of nitrogen per acre in 2.3 times across the field for a total of 230 million pounds. Per acre rates ranged from 109 pounds in North Dakota and 114 pounds in Minnesota to 308 pounds in Washington. Phosphate, totalling 184 million pounds, was applied an average of 1.5 trips at a combined rate of 167 pounds per acre. Application rates ranged from 79 and 80 pounds in North Dakota and Minnesota, respectively, to 227, 217 and 214 pounds in Washington, New York, and Colorado. Potash totaled 157 pounds per acre for an 11 State total of 159 million pounds. Applications averaged 1.4 trips across the field. Colorado had the lowest application rate, at 87 pounds per acre; Wisconsin had the highest with 322 pounds. Herbicides were applied to 83 percent of the potato acreage in 1993. Coverage ranged from 53 and 64 percent of the acreage in North Dakota and Minnesota to 89 percent or more in Idaho, Maine, Michigan, New York, Washington, and Wisconsin. Insecticide applications were lowest in Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon with 58, 79, and 84 percent of the area covered. Minnesota covered 93 percent of their potato acreage and North Dakota covered 95 percent. The remaining 6 States applied Insecticides to virtually all of their potatoes. Insecticide use for the eleven States in 1993 was an average of 88 percent of the potato acreage. Fungicide use approached general coverage in eight of the eleven States surveyed. Fungicide usage increased substantially in Michigan and Minnesota and remained high in North Dakota due to the wet growing season. However, Idaho with dominating acreage, covered only 48 percent of it's fields, bringing the U.S. average down to 76 percent. The use of other chemicals (primarily desiccants) on 53 percent of potato acreage was up from 43 percent the previous year. This year's report collected data on 10 different herbicides, 26 insecticides, 12 fungicides, and 8 other types of chemicals. The U.S. map that follows shows the number of usable reports, by State in the 1993 survey. These 11 States accounted for 1.12 million acres of fall potatoes and 94 percent of the total fall acres planted in the U.S. in 1993. The accompanying bar chart shows the top 5 active ingredients applied in 1993 with comparisons for the previous two years. The increased usage of fungicides to combat late and early blight is readily apparent in the chart. Percent of acres treated with Chlorothalonil and metalaxyl increased sharply from the previous two years. The acres treated in Louisiana were only 2 percent of the total while Georgia applied nitrogen on 55 percent of the total planted acres. The average number of nitrogen applications was 1.0 and the average rate per application was 20 pounds per acre. Application rates were lowest in Indiana and highest in Arkansas. Phosphate was applied on 21 percent of the planted area in the major States. Georgia applied phosphate to 63 percent of the soybean acreage while Kansas applications covered 7 percent of the planted acreage. Kentucky and Illinois had the highest application rate and Nebraska had the lowest. Potash applications were similar to phosphate in terms of the percent of acreage receiving an application. The heaviest potash application rate was in Ohio. Kansas had the lowest application rate. In the sixteen States surveyed, an average of 97 percent of the soybean acreage was treated with herbicides. Imazethapyr was applied to almost one-third of the acreage and trifluralin was applied to one-fourth of the acreage. Growers in eight of the 16 States surveyed reported applications of insecticides. Georgia and Louisiana producers reported the highest percent of acres receiving one or more insecticides. Producers in only five out of the 16 States reported fungicide applications. Estimates for only a few insecticides and fungicides are published separately due to insufficient reports. The U.S. map shows the number of usable reports by State included in the 1993 survey. The States represent 53.5 million acres of soybeans which is 90 percent of the soybeans planted in the U.S. in 1993. The bar chart shows the top 5 active ingredients used in 1993 compared with the previous two years. Winter Wheat Nitrogen fertilizer was applied to 86 percent of the winter wheat harvested acres in the 13 surveyed States. Area applied exceeded 60 percent in all States except South Dakota. In the surveyed States, about half the harvested area received phosphate fertilizer. Usage ranged from 14 percent in Colorado and Oregon to 95 percent in Ohio. Potash was used on 15 percent of the 13 State area with the Soft Red Winter producing States treating the highest percentage. All States treated at least a portion of the harvested area with herbicides. 2,4-D again was the most widely used in area applied and quantity. Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington treated over 90 percent of the harvested area with herbicides. Durum Wheat North Dakota durum growers applied the primary fertilizers to a lower percentage of acres than done in other spring wheat. Herbicide and fungicide use percentages were also lower than other spring wheat. MCPA was the most widely used herbicide. Other Spring Wheat Fertilizer application in the four States averaged 87, 80, and 23 percent of the acreage for nitrogen, phosphate, and potash, respectively. Minnesota growers applied the highest coverage of nitrogen and potash and North Dakota, applied the highest rate of phosphate. Herbicides were widely used in all States, with 2,4-D and MCPA most prevalent. Insecticide and fungicide use was limited. The U.S. map shows the number of usable reports for winter wheat, durum wheat, and other spring wheat and the States included in the 1993 survey. The winter wheat producing States represent 36.9 million acres or 84 percent of the total winter wheat harvested in the U.S. North Dakota was the only durum wheat State included in the survey and represents 1.95 million acres or 89 percent of the total planted acres. The other spring wheat States represent 17.3 million acres or 89 percent of the total planted acres. Three bar charts show the top 4 or 5 active ingredients applied in 1993 with comparison to the previous two years. Reliability Statement The probability nature of the survey provides expansion of data so that the estimates are statistically representative of chemical use on the targeted crops in the surveyed States. A complete census may have yielded different results. The reliability of these survey results are affected by sampling variability and non-sampling errors. The variability due to sampling was computed for all the chemical and acreage variables in the survey, and is expressed as a percentage. To interpret its meaning, imagine that the survey is repeated many times using the same sample size. For every two out of three times the survey is repeated, the results would not differ from those published here by more than the stated sampling variability. Sampling variability of the estimates differed considerably by chemical and crop. In general, the more often the chemical was applied, the smaller the sampling variability. The following table show the range of sampling variability for percent of acres treated and for application rate. The variability ranges in the table can be used to calculate approximate confidence bands for figures in the data tables of the report. For example, if a figure in the report is 30 percent of acres treated by a fertilizer, the confidence band for acres treated for a State with a small sample size would be 30 - (.15*30) to 30 + (.15*30) or 25.5 to 34.5 percent. For a State with a large sample size; the confidence band would be 30 - (.05*30) to 30 + (.05*30) or 28.5 to 31.5 percent. Fertilizer in this report refers to applications of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. Pesticides include any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest, and any substance or mixture of substances intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant. Pests targeted by pesticides include weeds, insects, fungi, and other forms of life. Herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other chemicals make up the four classes of pesticides presented in this report. Miticides and nematicides are included as insecticides. Soil fumigants, growth regulators, defoliants, and desiccants are included as other chemicals. This report excludes pesticides used for seed treatments, post-harvest applications to the commodity, and spot treatments. Active ingredient is the specific chemical which kills or controls the target pests. Pesticide products reported are converted to an amount of active ingredient in the summary program. Some active ingredients have more than one way of being converted. In this report, copper compounds are expressed in their metallic copper equivalent, and others such as glyphosate and 2,4-D in their acid equivalent. Trade name is the actual product name given to a specific formulation of a pesticide product. A formulation contains a specific concentration of the active ingredient, carrier materials, and other ingredients such as emulsifiers and wetting agents. Some formulations as in the case of pre-mixes, can contain more than one active ingredient. Common name is the published name for the active ingredient. Rate per application refers to the average number of pounds of fertilizer ingredient or pesticide active ingredient applied to an acre of land in one application. Rate per crop year is the average number of pounds applied of an ingredient to one acre of land counting multiple applications. Number of applications is the average number of times a treated acre receives a specific agricultural chemical. Area applied represents the percent of crop acres receiving one or more applications of a specific ingredient. This report does not contain acre treatments. However, acre treatments can be calculated by multiplying the acres planted, by the percent of area applied, and the average number of applications. Trade Names, Common Names, and Classes The following is a list of common name, associated class and trade name of active ingredients in this publication. The classes are herbicides (H), insecticides (I), fungicides (F), and other chemicals (O). This list is provided as an aid in reviewing pesticide data. Pre-mixes are not cataloged. The list is not complete for all pesticides used on field crops and NASS does not mean to imply use of any specific trade name.
