United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Chemical Usage 1996 Restricted use Pesticides Summary December 1997 National Agricultural Statistics Service Economics Research Service Ag Ch 1(97) 1996 Agricultural Chemical Use Estimates for Restricted Use Pesticides Overview: The agricultural chemical use estimates in this report are based on data compiled from the Agricultural Resources Management Survey and the Vegetable Chemical Use Survey which were conducted during the fall of 1996. All results refer to on-farm use of restricted use pesticides on the targeted field crops and vegetable crops for the 1996 crop year. Data were collected late in the growing season or after the farm operator had indicated that planned applications were completed. NASS enumerators personally interviewed farm operators or managers to obtain information on chemical applications made on sampled farm operations. The table below shows survey coverage for 1995 and 1996 for field crops. In the table are statistics on the number of States surveyed, the number of reports summarized, and the percent of the U. S. Crop acres accounted for in the surveyed States. States surveyed account for 59 to 88 percent of the U.S. acreage for these crops. The herbicide atrazine was the most widely used restricted use pesticide on any crop, with 71 percent of the corn acres reported as being treated. Other restricted use herbicides applied on more than 15 percent of planted acres were acetochlor on corn, imazaquin on soybeans, and cyanazine on cotton. A wide range of restricted use insecticides were reported. Several restricted use insecticides were applied on cotton but only aldicarb, lambdacyhalothrin, and methyl parathion were used on more than 15 percent of the planted acres. The survey indicates a broad use of insecticides on potatoes. Carbofuran and methamidophos were used on over one quarter of the acres planted to potatoes, and phorate was used on 16 percent of the acreage. The fungicide triphenyltin hydroxide was applied on 8 percent of the potato acres planted. Paraquat was used as a herbicide on corn and soybeans. Metam-sodium and dichloropropene were used for soil fumigation for potatoes and sulfuric acid was applied to kill vines to facilitate potato harvest. Few restricted use pesticides were used on soybeans or winter wheat. There were no reported applications of restricted use pesticides on durum wheat or other spring wheat. Vegetable Crops:Growers in 13 states were surveyed to obtain chemical use data on selected vegetable crops in 1996. The data on applications cover the period immediately following harvest of the 1995 crop through harvest of the 1996 crop. Only a few different restricted use herbicides were applied to vegetable crops. Atrazine was applied to more than half of all sweet corn acres, while alachlor and cyanazine were used on 23 and 13 percent respectively, of sweet corn for processing. Pronamide was used on 40 percent of the head lettuce and 45 percent of the other lettuce acres. Paraquat was used on 11 to 34 percent of the acres for asparagus, fresh market cucumbers, eggplant, bell peppers, strawberries, fresh and processing tomatoes. Many of the restricted use insecticides were utilized extensively on a broad range of vegetables. Permethrin was applied to 25 percent or more of the acres planted to cabbage, cauliflower, celery, sweet corn for processing, lettuce, spinach, and tomatoes for fresh market. Methomyl was used on over 50 percent of planted acres of celery, sweet corn for fresh market, and eggplant. Other restricted use insecticides applied to more than 50 percent of planted acres were esfenvalerate and oxydemeton-methyl on broccoli, abamectin and oxamyl on celery, and lambdacyhalothrin on processing cabbage. Abamectin was the most widely used restricted use insecticide on strawberries. Other restricted use pesticides with general usage included methyl bromide and chloropicrin. Methyl bromide was used on 68 percent of the strawberry acres, 50 percent of the fresh tomato acres, and 30 percent of the bell pepper acres. Chloropicrin usage ranged from 10 to 51 percent for those same crops. Metam-sodium was used on 25 percent of the processing tomato acres. Estimation procedures:The chemical applications data, reported by product name or trade name are reviewed within state and across states for reasonableness and consistency. This review compares reported data with manufacturer's recommendations and with data from other farm operators using the same product. Following this review, product information are converted to active ingredients. The chemical usage estimates in this publication consist of survey estimates of those active ingredients. Estimates of the total amount of active ingredient applied are based on the acreage estimates published in the NASS report "Crop Production - 1996 Summary" [Cr Pr 2-1(97)] and "Vegetables - 1996 Summary" [Vg1-2(97)]. The estimates for total amount applied will not be revised even if there are subsequent revisions to acreage planted to a given crop. Detailed data within a table may not multiply across or add down due to independent rounding of the published values. Terms and Definitions Active ingredient: The active ingredient is the specific chemical which kills or controls the target pests. Usage data are reported by pesticide product and are converted to an amount of active ingredient. A single method of conversion has been chosen for active ingredients having more than one way of being converted. For example in this report, copper compounds are expressed in their metallic copper equivalent, and others such as 2,4-D and glyphosate are expressed in their acid equivalent. Agricultural chemicals: The phrase agricultural chemicals refers to the active ingredients in pesticides. Application Rates: The application rates refer to the average number of pounds of a pesticide active ingredient applied to an acre of land. Rate per acre is the average number of pounds applied in one application. Rate per crop year is the average number of pounds applied counting multiple applications. Number of applications is the average number of times a treated acre receives a specific agricultural chemical. Area applied: The area that represents the percentage of crop acres receiving one or more applications of a specific agricultural chemical. This report does not contain acre treatments. However, acre treatments can be calculated by multiplying the acres planted by the percent of area applied and the average number of applications. Common name: The common name is an officially recognized name for an active ingredient. This report shows active ingredient by common name. Crop year: A crop year refers to the period immediately following harvest for the previous crop through harvest of the current crop. Pesticides:As defined by FIFRA, pesticides include any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest, and any substance or mixture of substances intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant. The four classes of pesticides presented in this report and the pests targeted are: herbicides - weeds, insecticides - insects, fungicides - fungi, and other chemicals - other forms of life. Miticides and nematicides are included as insecticides while soil fumigants, growth regulators, defoliants, and desiccants are included as other chemicals. This report excludes pesticides used for seed treatments, for spot treatments, and for postharvest applications to the commodity. Trade name: A trademark name given to a specific formulation of a pesticide product. A formulation contains a specific concentration of the active ingredient, carrier materials, and other ingredients such as emulsifiers and wetting agents. Some formulations as in the case of pre-mixes, can contain more than one active ingredient. Trade Names, Common Names, and Classes The following is a list of common name, associated class and trade name of active ingredients classified as restricted use pesticides at the Federal level. The classes are herbicides (H), insecticides (I), fungicides (F), and other chemicals (O). This list is provided as an aid in reviewing pesticide data. All labeled uses are not restricted on an active ingredient. In some cases only certain formulations, concentrations, or uses are restricted. The list is not complete for all restricted use pesticides. Non-farm and non-crop uses are excluded from the listing. Pre-mixes are also excluded. Inclusion on the list by NASS does not mean to imply use of any specific trade name. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class : Common Name : Trade Name ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I abamectin Agri-Mek, Zephyr, Avid H acetochlor Harness, Surpass H alachlor Lasso I aldicarb Temik I amitraz Mitac,Ovasyn H atrazine AAtrex I azinphos-methyl Guthion I bifenthrin Capture H butylate Genate, Sutan I carbofuran Furadan O chloropicrin several F chlorothalonil Bravo, Echo I chlorpyrifos Lorsban, Dursban I clofentezine Apollo H cyanazine Bladex I cyfluthrin Baythroid I cypermethrin Ammo, Cymbush ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- continued ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Class : Common Name : Trade Name ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I deltamethrin Decis I diazinon several O dichloropropene Telone H diclofop-methyl Hoelon I dicrotophos Bidrin H diflubenzuron Dimilin H dimethenamid Frontier, Guardsman I disulfoton Di-Syston I esfenvalerate Asana I ethion ethion I ethoprop Mocap I fenamiphos Nemacur I fonofos Dyfonate H imazaquin Scepter I lambdacyhalothrin Karate, Warrior O metam-sodium Vapam I methamidophos Monitor I methidathion Supracide I methomyl Lannate O methyl bromide several I methyl parathion several I mevinphos Phosdrin I oxydemeton-methyl Metasystox-R H oxamyl Vydate H,O paraquat Gramoxone, Cyclone, Starfire I permethrin Ambush, Pounce I phorate Thimet I Phostebupirim Phostebupirim I phosphamidon phosphamidon H picloram Tordon I profenofos Curacron H Pronamide Kerb I Pyrethrins Pyrethrins H simazine Princep O strychnine several O sulfuric acid sulfuric acid I sulprofos Bolstar I tefluthrin Force I terbufos Counter I tralomethrin Scout F triphenyltin hydroxide several I zeta-cypermethrin Fury, Mustang O zinc phosphide several ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report Features The next "Agricultural Chemical Usage" report will be released in May 1998.
