United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Sp Sy 3 (00) Agricultural Cash Rents 2000 Summary July 2000 Cropland Cash Rents Higher, Pasture Rents Drop The U.S. cropland cash rent in 2000 was up $2.50 from last year at $70.00 per acre. The Lake, Corn Belt, and Northern Plains, which account for the majority of cash rented cropland acreage, increased slightly from 1999. The Lake region was up $3.00 per acre while the Corn Belt increased by $2.00 and the Northern Plains was up $1.00. The Pacific region with its diverse agriculture had the largest increase of $14.00 per acre. Cash rents for cropland were mixed with the majority of States showing increases while other States held at the same level or dropped slightly. Western States of Arizona, Idaho, California, Oregon, and Washington all showed irrigated cropland exceeding $120 per acre. California again had the highest cash rent for irrigated cropland at $300 per acre. The major corn producing States of Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa had all cropland rents rise to $117, $100, and $115 per acre respectively. States in the Cornbelt and Northern Plains all showed slight increases in cropland cash rents or remained about the same. Pasture cash rents dropped from $8.90 to $ 8.50 per acre primarily due to drought conditions experienced across the Southwest. Regions most affected by the dry spell were the Southern Plains and Pacific each dropping $1.00 per acre while the Mountain region dropped $0.30. Pasture rents in the Corn Belt, Delta, and Northeast also declined from the previous year. The Southeast and Appalachian regions increased to $17.20 and $18.00. Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana pasture rents declined by $0.90, $0.50 and $1.50 per acre while States in the Northern Plains all showed increases except for Kansas which decreased by $0.50. Wisconsin again had the highest pasture rent at $38, unchanged from last year. Reliability of Data in this Report Survey Procedures: The cash rent estimates in this report are based primarily on the June Agricultural Survey conducted during the first 2 weeks of June. This survey is based on a probability area frame with a sample of approximately 10,800 segments or parcels of land which average approximately 1 square mile. Enumerators conducting the area survey contact all farmers operating land within the sampled segments and collect rates for cash rents. From these data, estimates are calculated. Estimating Procedures: National, regional and state cash rent data were reviewed for reasonability and consistency. Each State Statistical Office submits their pasture and cropland cash rent analyses to the Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB) which conduct a national review and prepares the crop or grazing year cash rent estimates for publication. Estimates were not set for States with insufficient reports to accurately reflect current year rents. Revision Policy: Cash Rents are subject to revision the following year and following the five-year Census of Agriculture. The basis for revision must be supported by additional data that directly affect the level of the estimate. Reliability: The survey used to make cash rent estimates are subject to sampling and non-sampling errors that are common to all surveys. Both types affect the "accuracy" of the estimates. Sampling error occurs because a complete census is not taken. The sampling error measures the variation in estimates from the average of all possible samples. Sampling errors cannot be applied directly to the values published in this report to determine confidence intervals since the official estimates represent a composite of information from more than a single source. An estimate of 100 with a sampling error of 1 would mean that chances are 19 out of 20 that the estimates from all possible samples averaged together would be between 98 and 102; which is the survey estimate, plus or minus two times the sampling error. The 2000 cash rent sampling errors for estimated States, ranged from 1 percent to 21 percent for cropland rents and from 1 percent to 15 percent for pasture rents. Nonsampling errors can occur in complete censuses as well as sample surveys. They are caused by the inability to obtain correct information from each person sampled, differences in interpreting questions or definitions, and mistakes in coding or processing data. To minimize non-sampling errors, vigorous quality controls are used in the data collection process and all data are carefully reviewed for consistency and reasonability.Released July 7, 2000, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture.
