HDR1012000120010228951500Agricultural Prices HDR2012000120010228951500Agricultural Prices Narrative Released February 28, 1995, by the Agricultural Statistics Board. February Prices Received Index Unchanged The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in February was 98 based on 1990-92=100, unchanged from January. Price gains from January for cattle, hogs, tomatoes, and corn offset price declines for lettuce, wheat, soybeans, and lemons. However, the seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also affects the overall index level. Lower relative seasonal marketings of corn, soybeans, cotton, and tobacco offset the affect of relatively higher seasonal marketings for cattle, milk, hogs, and broilers resulting in no change to the overall index. Compared with February 1994, the All Farm Products Index was 6 points (5.8 percent) lower. Price decreases from February 1994 for corn, soybeans, hogs, and milk more than offset price increases for cotton, tomatoes, strawberries, and celery. Pr 1 (2-95) Prices Received by Farmers The February All Farm Products Index was 98 percent of its 1990-92 base, unchanged from January but 5.8 percent below February 1994. All Crops: The February index was 103, unchanged from January but 6.4 percent below February 1994. Monthly price declines for commercial vegetables, oilseeds, and food grains from January offset gains for feed grains & hay. Feed Grains & Hay: The February index, at 99, was 2.1 percent above the previous month but 17 percent below February 1994. Higher prices for corn and grain sorghum more than offset lower feed barley prices. Corn prices, at $2.21 per bushel, were 2 cents above January due to strong export demand and concerns over growing conditions in South Africa's western corn belt as unfavorably warm, dry weather persists. Oil-Bearing Crops: The February index, at 97, was 1.0 percent below January and 19 percent below a year earlier. Lower prices for soybeans, cottonseed, and sunflowers more than offset higher prices for flaxseed. Soybean prices averaged $5.40 per bushel, down 7 cents per bushel from last month due to good crop conditions in South America. Cotton: The cotton index rose 1.5 percent from January and 24 percent from last February to 134. Cotton prices during February rose 1.3 cents per pound to a record 81.0 cents per pound. Exports were forecast at 9.6 million bales, second only to the 1926/27 record of 11.3 million bales. Food Grains: The February index, at 116, was 3.3 percent below the previous month and 7.9 percent below February 1994. Wheat prices fell 8 cents to $3.61 per bushel because of sluggish export sales and good winter wheat crop conditions. Livestock & Products: The February index, at 94, was 1.1 percent above January but 6.0 percent below a year earlier. February price increases for meat animals more than offset price decreases for poultry and milk. Meat Animals: The February index, at 92, increased 3.4 percent from January but was 5.2 percent below February 1994. The February all beef cattle price increased $1.20 per cwt to $68.70 but was down $1.40 from last year. The February all hog price increased to $39.40 per cwt, up $2.50 from January but down $8.50 from last year. Fed cattle supplies and hog slaughter have come down since January 1, supporting the price gains. Dairy Products: The February dairy products index, at 96, was unchanged from January but was down 6.8 percent from a year ago. The February all milk price decreased 10 cents to $12.50 per cwt. The fluid milk price decreased 20 cents to $12.50 while the manufacturing milk price increased 10 cent to $11.50. Poultry & Eggs: The poultry and eggs February index fell 1.0 percent from last month and 2.9 percent from last year to 100. Market eggs were down slightly from January to 50.1 cents per dozen. Average turkey prices declined 2.1 cents per pound from January, while broilers were unchanged. HDR2012000120010228951500Reliability Reliability of Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in August. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the August annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny. For corn and sorghum the five month period is September-January. For wheat, barley, and oats the five month period is August-October. HDR2012000120010228951500Feed Price Ratios Narrative Feed Price Ratios Feed Price Ratios : Modifications in the calculation of feed price ratios for Broiler-Feed, Egg-Feed, Milk-Feed and Turkey-Feed are a result of Prices Paid program changes initiated in January 1995. Prices paid for feed items will now be surveyed and published annually in April rather than quarterly. Beginning February 1995, the four feed price ratios are calculated using a different procedure. NASS will utilize rations common to dairy and poultry production as established by University Animal Nutritionists'. The new methodology utilizes major raw feed component prices from the NASS agricultural commodity prices published monthly. The major feed components of corn and soybeans account for 83 to 91 percent of the total ingredients in the rations. The contribution for feed additives and antibiotics are held constant. A historical data series for the new methodology is provided on pages 44 and 45 of this report for comparison with the old series. Two major differences in the new feed price ratio series are 1) the ratios are more subject to change because they measure month-to-month rather than quarter-to-quarter movement of feed component prices, and 2) the new ratios are higher for each of the four feed price ratios since ration prices are based upon raw ingredient prices and not commercial feed prices. These new ratios still trend well with the previous ratios. Also, the new Egg-Feed Ratio is based upon market egg prices rather than all egg prices. The previous ratio used the all egg price which included a price for hatching eggs.
