HDR1012000120010330951500Agricultural Prices HDR2012000120010330951500Agricultural Prices Narrative Released March 30, 1995, by the Agricultural Statistics Board. March Prices Received Index Unchanged The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in March was 98 based on 1990- 92=100, unchanged from February. Price gains from February for vegetables (lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower), oranges, corn, and soybeans offset price declines for cattle, hogs, and wheat. However, the seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also affect the overall index level. Lower relative seasonal marketings of cattle, cotton, corn, and oranges offset the affect of relatively higher seasonal marketings of milk, strawberries, asparagus, and tomatoes resulting in no change to the overall index. Compared with March 1994, the All Farm Products Index was 7 points (6.7 percent) lower. Price decreases from March 1994 for cattle, corn, soybeans, hogs, and milk more than offset price increases for cotton and vegetables (broccoli, lettuce, and celery). Pr 1 (3-95) Prices Received by Farmers The March All Farm Products Index was 98 percent of its 1990-92 base, unchanged from February but 6.7 percent below March 1994. All Crops:The March index was 104, up 2.0 percent from February but 4.6 percent below March 1994. Price gains for commercial vegetables, fruits, cotton, and oilseeds from February more than offset declines for food grains. Commercial Vegetables:The March index, at 123, was 7.9 percent above the previous month and 35 percent above March 1994. Higher March prices for lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower more than offset lower prices for celery, tomatoes, and sweet corn. Excessive rains and flooding in California sent prices for lettuce, broccoli, and cauliflower sharply higher. Tomato prices have continued to retreat as Florida supplies and imports from Mexico have increased. Cotton:The March cotton index rose 3.7 percent from February and 27 percent from last March to 140. Average cotton prices during March rose 3.5 cents from February, reaching a new record high of $0.851 per pound. Oil-Bearing Crops:The March index, at 99, was 2.1 percent above Februarybut 18 percent below a year earlier. Higher prices for soybeans pushed the index up. Soybean prices averaged $5.53 per bushel, up 13 cents per bushel from last month due to the weaker dollar and good export demand, along with labor disputes at Brazilian ports. Food Grains:The March index, at 113, was 2.6 percent below the previous month and 12 percent below March 1994. Both wheat and rice prices fell from February, with the all wheat price declining 12 cents. Wheat prices averaged $3.50 per bushel. Prices in the soft red winter and white wheat states showed the largest decreases. Livestock & Products:The March index, at 93, was 1.1 percent below February and 7.9 percent below a year earlier. March price decreases for meat animals more than offset increases for poultry. Meat Animals:The March index, at 89, decreased 2.2 percent from February and was 9.2 percent below March 1994. The March all beef cattle price decreased $1.70 per cwt to $67.00 and was down $5.30 from last year. The March all hog price decreased to $38.30 per cwt, down 80 cents from February and down $6.10 from last year. Dairy Products:The March dairy products index, at 96, was unchanged from February but was down 6.8 percent from a year ago. The all milk price, at $12.60 per cwt, was unchanged from February but 90 cents below a year ago. Poultry & Eggs:At 101, the March index increased 1.0 percent from February but declined 5.6 percent from March 1994. Turkey prices rose 1.1 cents per pound in March to $0.383 while broiler prices increased slightly to $0.328 per pound. Market egg prices declined slightly to $0.497 per dozen. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny.
