HDR1012000120010629951500Agricultural Prices HDR2012000120010629951500Agricultural Prices Narrative Released June 29, 1995, by the Agricultural Statistics Board. June Prices Received Index Unchanged The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in June was 100 based on 1990- 92=100, unchanged from May. Price declines from May for lettuce, strawberries, milk, and peaches more than offset gains for tomatoes, hogs, corn, and wheat. However, the seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also affect the overall index level. Higher relative seasonal marketings of wheat, grapes, hay, and cantaloupes more than offset the effect of relatively lower seasonal marketings of oranges, cattle, cotton, and strawberries, resulting in no change to the overall index. Compared with June 1994, the All Farm Products Index was also unchanged. Higher prices in June relative to a year earlier for wheat, cotton, tomatoes, and peaches were offset by lower prices for broilers, soybeans, milk, and cattle. Pr 1 (6-95) Prices Received by Farmers The June All Farm Products Index was 100 percent of its 1990-92 base, unchanged from both the previous month and June 1994. All Crops: The June index was 113, down 1.7 percent from May but 4.6 percent above June 1994. Price declines from May for lettuce and non-citrus fruits more than offset gains for tomatoes, corn, wheat, and cotton. Food Grains: The June index, at 128, was up 7.6 percent from the previous month and 17 percent from June 1994. Prices were higher for both wheat and rice. Wheat prices averaged $3.85 per bushel, up 19 cents from May. Forecasted lower U.S. supplies and strong export demand are the basis for the price improvements. Commercial Vegetables: The commercial vegetable index in June was 123, down 17 percent from May but 19 percent above a year ago. Lettuce prices declined substantially as supplies rebounded from flood reduced California marketings earlier this year. Tomato prices rose on a decline in Florida supplies due to wet harvest conditions. Snap beans and cucumbers moved slightly higher on light supplies. Onion prices declined seasonally as more spring crop supplies became available. Broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, and sweet corn prices moved lower on seasonal patterns. Feed Grains & Hay: The index, at 111, was up 2.8 percent from May but down 1.8 percent from one year ago. Prices were higher for all crops except hay. Good export demand and forecasted lower U.S. corn supplies, due to planting delays, pushed the corn price up 15 cents to $2.56 per bushel. Fruit & Nuts: The June index was 98, unchanged from May 1995 but up 4.3 percent from June 1994. Price increases from May for oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and pears were offset by decreases in grapes, peaches, and strawberries. Orange prices were up slightly due to a lower percentage of processing orange marketings and higher fresh prices. Increased supplies of California grapes seasonally reduced prices. Potatoes & Dry Beans: The June index, at 114, was 2.7 percent above May, but was 3.4 percent below a year ago. Dry bean prices decreased $1.30 per cwt to $23.30. Potato prices increased 25 cents per cwt to $6.53 as demand increased with reduced supplies of storage potatoes. Livestock & Products: The June index, at 90, was 2.3 percent above May but 4.3 percent below a year earlier. Price increases from May for meat animals and poultry more than offset a price decrease for milk. Meat Animals: The meat animals index rose 3.7 percent from May but declined 2.3 percent from last June to 85. June beef cattle prices increased 70 cents per cwt from May but were down $1.20 from last year to $61.50. Heavy beef supplies and large feedlot placements continue to hold prices at a low level. The June all hog price increased $4.60 per cwt from May but was down 90 cents from last June to $41.80. This is the first month that the all hog price has risen above the $40 mark since August 1994, when the price was also at $41.80. Dairy Products: The June dairy products index, at 93, was down 2.1 percent from May and was down 3.1 percent from a year ago. The all milk price decreased 20 cents to $12.20 per cwt. Fluid milk price decreased 10 cents to $12.30 while manufacturing milk price increased 10 cents to $11.10. HDR2012000120010629951500Reliability of Prices Received Reliability of Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny. For corn and sorghum the five month period is September-January. For wheat, barley, and oats the five month period is June-October.
