August Prices Received Index Unchanged The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in August was 101 based on 1990- 92=100, unchanged from July. Price gains from July for broilers, hogs, peaches, and wheat more than offset declines for tomatoes, potatoes, soybeans, and cotton. However, the seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also affect the overall index level. Lower relative seasonal marketings of wheat, hay, milk, and broilers more than offset the effect of relatively higher seasonal marketings of tobacco, cattle, grapes, and barley, resulting in no change to the overall index. Compared with August 1994, the All Farm Products Index was up 4 points (4.1 percent). Higher prices in August relative to a year earlier for wheat, corn, hogs, and lettuce more than offset lower prices for cattle, tomatoes, calves, and milk. Pr 1 (8-95) Prices Received by Farmers The August All Farm Products Index was 101 percent of its 1990-92 base, unchanged from July but 4.1 percent above August 1994. All Crops: The August index was 112, down 0.9 percent from July but 11 percent above August 1994. Generally, prices of feed grains, cotton, oilseeds, and potatoes were down from July while food grains and fruits were up. Vegetable prices were mixed. Food Grains: The August index, at 138, was up 1.5 percent from the previous month and 27 percent from August 1994. Wheat prices averaged $4.17 per bushel, up 8 cents from July and the highest monthly price since February 1981. Possible harvest delays in the spring wheat states, projected lower foreign production, and strong export demand drove wheat prices higher. Fruit & Nuts: The August index was 114, up 8.6 percent from July 1995 and 14 percent from August 1994. Prices rose from July for all citrus fruits, apples, and peaches, moving the index to the highest level in almost two years. New crop California apple marketings and good export demand for Washington apples boosted prices above last month. Feed Grains & Hay: The index, at 112, was down 0.9 percent from July but up 14 percent from one year ago. Prices were lower for all feed grains. Forecasted larger U.S. feed grain supplies more than offset higher domestic use and export projections for the 1995 crops. Potatoes & Dry Beans: The August index was 123, down 17 percent from July but 0.8 percent above August 1994. Potato prices decreased $1.73 per cwt to $7.25 as the higher priced spring and summer crops played out. Dry bean prices decreased $1.70 per cwt to $22.00. Cotton: The August index, at 126, declined 12 percent from July but rose 15 percent from August 1994. August cotton prices decreased 10.2 cents per pound from last month to 76.4 cents per pound. This was the lowest price since December 1994, but 9.6 cents higher than August 1994. Harvest of the 1995-96 crop began in the coastal regions and Rio Grande Valley area of Texas during August. Livestock & Products: The August index was 92, 1.1 percent above July but 2.1 percent below a year earlier. Prices were above July for poultry, eggs, hogs, and milk but lower for cattle and calves. Meat Animals: The meat animals index, at 85, was unchanged from July but declined 5.6 percent from last August. Beef cattle prices declined 10 cents per cwt from July and were down $6.50 from last August to $59.40. Hog prices, at $48.30 per cwt, were $2.10 above July, $6.50 above August 1994, and the highest monthly average in four years. Strong export sales supported the higher hog prices. Poultry & Eggs: The August poultry and eggs index, at 112, increased 6.7 percent from last month and 4.5 percent from August 1994. Prices were up from last month for all items in the index. Prices advanced mainly due to shortened supplies of poultry and eggs as a result of extreme heat during July. Losses due to high temperatures were expected to reach several million layers in July, mostly in mid-western States. HDR2012000120010831951500Reliability Reliability of Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny.
