September Prices Received Index Jumps 3 Points The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in September was 105 based on 1990-92=100, up 3 points (2.9 percent) from August. Price gains from August for lettuce, wheat, corn, and milk more than offset declines for grapes, potatoes, cattle, and strawberries. The seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell can also affect the overall index level. However, lower relative seasonal marketings of cattle, wheat, broilers, and grapes offset the effect of relatively higher seasonal marketings of peanuts, soybeans, corn, and cotton. Compared with September 1994, the All Farm Products Index was up 8 points (8.2 percent). Higher prices in September relative to a year earlier for hogs, corn, lettuce, and wheat more than offset lower prices for cattle, calves, and lemons. Pr 1 (9-95) Prices Received by Farmers The September All Farm Products Index was 105 percent of its 1990-92 base, up 2.9 percent from August and 8.2 percent above September 1994. All Crops: The September index was 116, up 2.7 percent from August and 14 percent above September 1994. Prices of food grains, feed grains, cotton, tobacco, soybeans, and commercial vegetables were mostly up from August while potatoes were down. Fruit prices were mixed. Oil-Bearing Crops: The index, at 104, was unchanged from August but up 5.1 percent from a year ago. Higher soybean prices offset lower prices for peanuts and sunflowers. Soybean prices averaged $5.92 per bushel, up 9 cents from the previous month. Concerns over soybean crop quality and yields provided strong support to soybean prices. Commercial Vegetables: The commercial vegetables index in September was 133, up 36 percent from August and 29 percent above a year ago. Lettuce, tomato, celery, cucumber, sweet corn, and cantaloupe prices all rose, partially due to early onset of cool temperatures over much of the nation and the corresponding impact on supplies. Ample supplies resulted in steady prices for onions. Other vegetable crops followed seasonal patterns. Food Grains: The September index, at 145, was up 3.6 percent from the previous month and 23 percent from September 1994. Rice prices averaged $7.70 per cwt and wheat prices $4.42 per bushel, up 6 and 17 cents respectively, from August. Forecasted lower supplies, because of lower U.S. yields, and strong export demand are the basis for the price improvements. Cotton: The September index rose 8.9 percent from August and 24 percent from September 1994 to 135. The September cotton price, at 82.1 cents per pound, was up 6.9 cents from last month and up 16.2 cents from September last year. Marketings of higher priced Arizona and California old crop cotton during the first half of September helped drive the average price up from a month earlier. Bales ginned as of September 1 were 37 percent below the same period a year ago. Potatoes & Dry Beans: The September index, at 102, was down 14 percent from August but up 9.7 percent from September 1994. Potato prices decreased 99 cents per cwt to $6.01 in September as seasonal pressure from the new fall crop dampened prices. Dry bean prices decreased $1.20 per cwt to $18.50. Livestock & Products: The September index was 93, 1.1 percent above July and 2.2 percent above a year earlier. Prices were above August for poultry and eggs but slightly lower for cattle and hogs. Meat Animals: The meat animal index, at 85, was unchanged from August but up 1.2 percent from last September. Beef cattle prices declined 50 cents per cwt from August and were down $4.60 from September 1994 to $58.90. September hog prices, at $48.20 per cwt, declined 40 cents from a month earlier but were $12.80 above the previous year. Although beef cattle and hog prices declined slightly from August, the meat animals index was unchanged due to rounding. Poultry & Eggs: The September poultry and eggs index, at 115, increased 2.7 percent from last month and 7.5 percent from September 1994. Prices were up for all items in the index from last month. Eggs, up 4.7 percent, showed the largest increase from August, followed by turkeys, up 4.5 percent, and broilers, up 3.0 percent. Market egg prices remained strong as production continues to lag behind year earlier levels, and turkey prices remained steady to strong due to tightening supplies and a favorable export market. See January and July Agricultural Prices for details on adjusted base price and parity price computations. 2/ Seasonally adjusted price as percentage of parity price. 3/ Wholesale extracted. Adjusted base price derived from state annual averages prices weighted by production. For 1982 through 1985 the national averages are the support prices. 4/ Average local market price, excluding incentive payments. 5/ Equivalent packinghouse-door returns for CA, NY (apples only), OR (except peaches), and WA. Price at point of first sale for other states. 6/ Equivalent returns for bulk fruit at first delivery point. 7/ Equivalent returns at processing plant door. 8/ Equivalent returns at packinghouse door. 9/ Includes some processing. 10/ Based on "as sold" prices for fresh fruit in all states. 11/ Prices in-shell basis except almonds which are shelled basis. 12/ F.O.B. shipping point prices. HDR2012000120010929951500Citrus Prices Citrus Prices Revised State and U.S. monthly average prices and equivalent returns, and marketing year average prices for the 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95 citrus crops are shown on pages 26 through 52 of this publication. These data, together with the September Agricultural Prices 1966-94 issues, supplement to the September 1965 issue, supplements to the October 1953-1964 issues and Statistical Bulletin No. 322 published in September 1962, bring to date the citrus price bulletin published as a supplement to the November 1952 issue of Agricultural Prices. Revised monthly prices refer to all fruit sold in a given month regardless of the crop year in which the fruit was harvested. Marketing year average prices refer to the prices received by growers for the entire marketing season for any one crop year. The crop year 1994-95 as shown on all citrus tables in this publication refers to the crop which bloomed in 1994 and was marketed during the 1994-95 season. For example, the 1994-95 marketing year average price received by California growers for tangerines refers to marketings from October 1994 through May 1995. In some years the season may vary a month or two, but a price was estimated only for those months with sufficient movement. Monthly and marketing year average prices are weighted by box size at the U.S. level for tangerines, oranges, and grapefruit and at the state level for the 1992-93 and 1993-94 California grapefruit crops. Approximate net contents per box are as follows: Grapefruit: Arizona and California Desert Valleys - 64 lbs. for the 1992-93 and 1993-94 crops, 67 lbs. for the 1994-95 crop, other California areas - 67 lbs., Florida - 85 lbs. and Texas - 80 lbs; Lemons - 76 lbs; Limes - 88 lbs.; Oranges: Arizona and California - 75 lbs., Florida - 90 lbs., and Texas - 85 lbs.; Tangelos - 90 lbs.; Tangerines: Arizona and California - 75 lbs. and Florida - 95 lbs.; Temples - 90 lbs. Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny.
