November Prices Received Index Up 1 Point The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in November was 105 based on 1990-92=100, up 1 point (1.0 percent) from October. Price gains from October for soybeans, corn, cattle, and potatoes more than offset price declines for hogs, lettuce, oranges, and lemons. The seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also can affect the overall index level, but these changes were essentially offsetting in November. Higher relative seasonal marketings of cotton, milk, cattle, and cottonseed offset the effect of relatively lower seasonal marketings of soybeans, peanuts, potatoes, and sorghum. Compared with November 1994, the All Farm Products Index was 10 points (11 percent) higher. Compared with November 1994, higher prices for corn, soybeans, hogs, and wheat more than offset lower prices for cattle, lettuce, calves, and broccoli. Pr 1 (11-95) Prices Received by Farmers The November All Farm Products Index was 105 percent of its 1990-92 base, up 1.0 percent from October and 11 percent above November 1994. All Crops: The November index, at 116, was up 2.7 percent from October and 16 percent above November 1994. Oil-Bearing Crops: The index was 113, up 5.6 percent from October and 16 percent from one year ago. Higher prices for soybeans and cottonseed more than offset lower prices for peanuts and sunflowers. Soybean prices averaged $6.43 per bushel, up 28 cents from the previous month. Forecasted lower U.S. and world soybean production and ending stocks, along with forecasted lower U.S. cottonseed production, were the primary market forces at work during the first half of November. Feed Grains & Hay: The November index was 126, up 3.3 percent from the previous month and 40 percent from November 1994. Prices were higher for all feed grains. The November corn price averaged $2.90 per bushel, the highest since September 1984. Forecasted lower U.S. and world feed grain production coupled with higher projected U.S. corn exports fueled the price increases. Potatoes & Dry Beans: The November index, at 106, was 13 percent above October and 15 percent above last year. Potatoes increased 88 cents per cwt to $6.26, following seasonal price patterns as more fresh market potatoes were marketed. Dry bean prices decreased 10 cents per cwt to $19.20. All Fruit: The November index, at 96, declined 13 percent from the previous month, but increased 17 percent from last year. Supplies of new crop fruit dampened prices for apples and citrus. Oranges contributed most to the index decline. Livestock & Products: The November index was 94, up 2.2 percent from October and 4.4 percent above a year earlier. Meat Animals: The November meat animal index, at 82, was down 1.2 percent from both October 1995 and November a year ago. November hog prices, at $40.00 per cwt, dropped $5.60 from a month earlier, but were $12.00 above the previous year. Heavy slaughter and lighter demand for pork contributed to the decline in prices. Beef cattle prices rebounded slightly in November from four consecutive months of declining prices to $60.70 per cwt, $1.90 above October 1995. Steer and heifer prices rose $2.80 from October, while cow and calf prices dropped $2.90 and $2.10, respectively. Favorable export potential and lower October slaughter contributed to the increase in beef prices. Poultry & Eggs: The November poultry and eggs index was 120, up 6.2 percent from last month and 17 percent above November 1994. Prices increased for all items in the index from the previous month. Market egg prices, up 22 percent, showed the largest increase from October, followed by turkeys, up 5.3 percent, and broilers, up 4.4 percent. Market egg prices, the highest since March 1991, were boosted by short supplies and seasonal demand, while turkey prices continue to strengthen due to improved demand and unexpected death losses last summer. Dairy Products: The November dairy products index, at 105, was up 1.9 percent from October and 5.0 percent from last year. The all milk price increased 30 cents to $13.70 per cwt. The fluid milk price increased 20 cents to $13.70 and the manufacturing milk price increased 10 cents to $12.80. Milk supplies remain very tight as production has been slow to rebound from seasonal lows. HDR2012000120011130951500Reliability Reliability of Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny.
