For assistance with general agricultural statistics, information about NASS, its products or services, contact the NASS Information Hotline at 1-800-727-9540 or E-mail: NASS@NASS.USDA.GOV Prices Received Index Rises 8 Points The All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in June was a record 119 based on 1990-92=100, up 8 points (7.2 percent) from May. Price gains from May for cattle, broilers, strawberries, and lettuce more than offset price declines for wheat, soybeans, sweet corn and hay. The seasonal changes in the mix of commodities farmers sell also affect the overall index level. Higher seasonal marketings of wheat, grapes, and hay more than offset the lower marketings of oranges, tomatoes, and potatoes. These changes contributed four points of the eight point increase in the overall index. Compared with June 1995, the All Farm Products Index was 19 points (19 percent) higher. Price increases from June 1995 for corn, wheat, hogs, and broilers more than offset price decreases for cattle and calves, cucumbers, and lemons. Prices Paid Index Unchanged The June Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) was 115 percent of it's 1990-92 average. The index was unchanged from May but up 5 points (4.5 percent) from June 1995. Since May 1996, prices were higher for feeder cattle purchased, feed, gasoline, harvesting equipment, and other farm machinery. Prices were lower for agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, feeder pigs purchased, diesel fuel, supplies and repairs, and tractors. Index Summary Table ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- : 1995 : 1996 Index :----------------------------------------------------- 1990-92=100 : May : Jun : May : Jun ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- : : : : Prices Received : 100 : 100 : 111 : 119 : : : : Prices Paid 1/ : 109 : 110 : 115 : 115 : : : : Ratio 2/ : 92 : 91 : 97 : 103 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/ Prices paid indexes (1990-92=100) published monthly beginning January 1996. Indexes for 1995 were constructed for historical comparison. 2/ Ratio of index of prices received by farmers to index of prices paid. The National Agricultural Statistics Service will not publish revised adjusted base prices used in parity calculations in the July 1996 "Agricultural Prices". Historically, the July revisions of the January adjusted base prices have been nominal. Monthly parity prices will continue to be published. Pr 1 (6-96) Prices Received by Farmers The June All Farm Products Index was a record 119 percent of its 1990-92 base, up 7.2 percent from May and 19 percent above June 1995. All Crops: The June index was a record 141, up 7.6 percent from May and 25 percent above June 1995. Price gains for vegetables, fruits, and feed grains more than offset declines for food grains, hay, and oilseeds. Food Grains: The June index, at 176, was down 3.8 percent from the previous month, but up 38 percent from June 1995. June prices were lower for both wheat and rice. The June wheat price was down 42 cents from the record high May price of $5.73 per bushel, but was still $1.47 above a year ago. Rice prices fell 14 cents from May to $9.55 per cwt, but were still well above June 1995. Expectations of a smaller rice crop in 1996/97 and stronger domestic use are helping support prices. Feed Grains & Hay: The June index was 166, down 2.4 percent from last month, but 50 percent above June 1995. Lower prices for oats, sorghum, and hay more than offset higher prices for corn and barley. Oat prices, at $2.18 per bushel, fell for the first time since September 1995, but were still 80 cents above June a year ago. The June corn price averaged $4.19 per bushel and the barley price averaged $3.57, both new record highs. Supplies of feed grains will continue to be very tight until the new corn harvest begins. Cotton: The June index was 130, up 0.7 percent from May, but down 0.8 percent from June 1995. The June cotton price, at 79.0 cents per pound, increased almost a penny from May, but was down slightly from a year ago. Continued strong U.S. mill consumption has kept prices high. Oil-Bearing Crops: The June index, at 133, was down 2.9 percent from May, but up 30 percent from June 1995. Soybean prices fell 26 cents per bushel from May to $7.43, while sunflowers dropped 50 cents per cwt to $13.10. Export demand for soybeans have weakened since April with the rise in prices and a larger projected Brazilian crop. Commercial Vegetables: The June index of 117 was 17 percent above the May level of 100 but 4.1 percent below this time last year. Higher prices for tomatoes, onions, lettuce, celery, and cantaloupes more than offset lower prices for carrots, cauliflower and sweet corn to move the index higher. Contributing most to the monthly increase was higher Lettuce and Onion prices reflecting slightly lighter supplies. Other vegetable prices followed seasonal patterns. Potatoes & Dry Beans: The June index, at 142, was 2.9 percent above May and 17 percent above a year ago. Potato prices increased to $8.31 per cwt, reflecting seasonal trends. Dry bean prices increased 90 cents to $26.10 per cwt. Livestock & Products: The June index, at 100, was up 4.2 percent from May and 11 percent above a year earlier. Cattle, broiler, and egg prices were up from May while hog prices were down. Meat Animals: The June index, at 87, was up 3.6 percent from May and 2.4 percent from a year ago. The June hog price, at $56.00 per cwt, was down slightly from May, but was $13.80 higher than last year. Weekly hog slaughter is running 8-10 percent below a year ago. The June beef cattle price, at $58.00 per cwt, was up $3.40 from May, but was $2.90 below a year earlier. Feedlot placements are well below year-ago levels. Poultry and Eggs: The June index, at 123, was up 7.0 percent from May and the highest since May 1989. Broiler prices were up 3.4 cents per pound from May, turkeys were up 1.6 cents, and market eggs were up 2 cents. Strength in both the domestic and export markets has helped keep egg prices well above year earlier levels, even though production is higher. Strong export sales and a slow down in production gains have also supported broiler and turkey prices. Dairy Products: The June index, at 111, was up 1.8 percent from May and 19 percent above a year ago. The June milk price increased to $14.50 per cwt, reflecting light supplies and continued good demand for dairy products. Reliability of Prices Received by Farmers Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices" and in the annual summary published in July. A schedule of monthly revisions is published in the December issue of "Agricultural Prices" and in the July annual summary. Reliability: U.S. price estimates generally have a sampling error of less than one half percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of prices received estimates for major grain commodities, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown in the table on the next page. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for the 5-month corn price is 0.2 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the current 5-month price of $2.47 per bushel will not be above or below the final 5-month price by more than 0.2 percent, or about half of a cent. Chances are 9 out of 10 (90% confidence interval) that the difference will not exceed 0.3 percent, or about three-fourths of a penny. For corn and sorghum the five month period is September-January. For wheat, barley, and oats the five month period is June-October. Prices Paid The June Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) was 115 (1990-92=100), unchanged from May but up 4.5 percent from June 1995. Production Index: The farm production, goods, and services index for June 1996, at 116, was 0.9 percent above last month and 6.4 percent higher than June last year. Since May 1996, prices were higher for feeder cattle purchased, feed, gasoline, harvesting equipment, and other farm machinery but were lower for agricultural chemicals, fertilizers, feeder pigs purchased, diesel fuel, supplies and repairs, and tractors. Feed: At 137,the feed index was unchanged from May but 37 percent higher than June a year ago. All feed component prices were higher compared with last month but not enough to change the index level. Feed grain and complete feed prices showed the most increase. Livestock and Poultry: The index for livestock and poultry purchases was 73, an increase of 4.3 percent from last month but 12 percent below June a year earlier. Higher June feeder cattle and calf prices, at $58.20 per cwt, were partially offset by lower feeder pig prices, at $62.00. Agricultural Chemicals: The chemical index remained unchanged from May at 117. The index was 1.7 percent above June last year. The index remained unchanged even though prices for all chemical groups were down slightly from last month. Fertilizer: At 128, the fertilizer index was unchanged from May but was 2.4 percent above June a year ago. Prices for all fertilizer groups were slightly lower. The price changes were not enough to impact the index level. Fuels: The fuels index, at 105, was unchanged from last month but 12 percent above June 1995. Higher gasoline prices since May were offset by lower diesel and LP fuel prices. Farm Machinery: The farm machinery index, at 124, was unchanged from May but was 3.3 percent greater than June last year. Lower June tractor prices offset slightly higher harvesting and other machinery prices. Prices Paid by Farmers Definition: Prices paid by farmers represent the average costs of inputs purchased by farmers and ranchers to produce agricultural commodities. Conceptually, the average price when multiplied by quantity purchased should equal total producer expenditures for the item. Survey Procedures: The prices paid data are obtained from establishments that sell goods and services to farmers and ranchers. Annually, about 8,500 firms are randomly selected from lists by type of item sold with an average response rate in the range of 75-80 percent. Firms are asked to report the price for the specified item "most commonly bought by farmers" or that was the "volume seller". Approximately 135 items are surveyed each April to represent all production input items purchased. The survey reference period for most items is the 5 business days centered around the 15th of the month. Separate prices paid surveys are conducted for agricultural chemicals, fuels, feed, fertilizer, machinery, and seed. Summary and Estimation Procedures: The annual April Paid Survey is summarized as a nonprobability survey. Average prices reported are aggregated to the region and U.S. level using weights available from expenditure data and other administrative sources. Price recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and Headquarters for review by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. Also, the change in price level for individual items surveyed are combined to the regional and U.S. levels, and are published as prices paid indexes referenced to a specific base period. Prices paid indexes for new autos and trucks, building materials, farm supplies, motor supplies, and marketing containers are updated based on price changes measured in selected Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indexes. Revisions: Any revisions are published in the monthly and in annual issues of "Agricultural Prices". The basis for revision must be supported by additional data that directly affect the level of the estimate. More revisions are likely in April when separate prices paid surveys are conducted, in lieu of BLS indexes, by the USDA to measure price change. Reliability: Current methods of summarization in April are not designed directly to calculate sampling errors. However, analytical measures approximate the U.S. relative sampling errors for major items around 10 percent. Any nonsampling errors are attributed to such things as the inability to obtain correct information, differences in interpreting questions or definitions, mistakes in coding or processing the data, etc. Efforts are made at each step in the survey process to minimize these nonsampling errors. Program Change: Effective January 1, 1995, the National Agricultural Statistics Service updated the weights and changed the construction of its prices paid and received by farmers indexes. A Federal Register Notice dated October 28, 1994 discussed these program modifications. A 1990-92 reference and base period replaced the 1977 reference and 1971-73 base weight period. Five-year moving average weights replaced the current fixed 1971-73 base period weights. The 1910-14=100 price indexes, required by statute for computing parity prices, were linked forward based on the changes in the new 1990-92=100 indexes. The new indexes were constructed by multiplying the ratios of the current prices to the base period prices by the moving average weights (adjusted for seasonal marketing patterns for the prices received indexes).
