Pr 1 (6-01) Agricultural Prices National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Released June 28, 2001, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. For information on "Agricultural Prices" or other assistance, see page B-11. Prices Received Index Down 1 Point The Preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received in June was 107 based on 1990-92=100, down 1 point (0.9 percent) from the May Index. Lower prices for cantaloupes, lettuce, sweet corn, and tomatoes were partially offset by higher prices for milk, strawberries, celery, and broilers. The seasonal change in the mix of commodities farmers sell often affects the overall index. Higher seasonal marketings of wheat, grapes, hay, and peaches were offset by lower marketings of strawberries, tomatoes, oranges, and cattle. Compared with June 2000, the All Farm Products Index was 9 points (9.2 percent) higher. Price increases from June 2000 for milk, broilers, cattle, and wheat were partially offset by lower prices for cantaloupes, corn, soybeans, and eggs. Prices Paid Index Unchanged The June Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) was 123 percent of the 1990-92 average. The index was unchanged from May but 3 points (2.5 percent) above June 2000. Lower prices in June for nitrogen fertilizers, hay and forages, feeder pigs, and complete feeds offset higher prices for feeder cattle, feed concentrates, insecticides, and mixed fertilizers. Prices Received by Farmers The June All Farm Products Index was 107 percent of its 1990-92 base, down 0.9 percent from the May index but 9.2 percent above the June 2000 index. All Crops: The June index was 101, down 3.8 percent from May but 3.1 percent above June 2000. From May, index decreases for vegetables, food grains, and feed grains and hay more than offset index increases for fruits and nuts, oil- bearing crops, and potatoes and dry beans. Food Grains: The June Food Grains Index, at 91, was 4.2 percent below the previous month but 8.3 percent above June 2000. The June all wheat price, at $2.76 per bushel, was down 23 cents from the May price but 26 cents above June 2000. Harvest pressure and weak export demand caused prices to drop. The rice price, at $4.95 per cwt, was down 20 cents from last month and 85 cents below a year earlier. Feed Grains and Hay: The June index was 90, down 1.1 percent from last month but unchanged from June 2000. The corn price, at $1.76 per bushel, was down 6 cents from May and 15 cents below the June 2000 price. Favorable weather in the Corn Belt drove prices lower. The all hay price, at $95.80 per ton, was down $10.20 from last month but $13.30 above June 2000. Oil-Bearing Crops: The June Oil-Bearing Crops Index, at 80, was up 3.9 percent from the May index but 9.1 percent below June 2000. The soybean price, at $4.47 per bushel, was up 15 cents from May but 46 cents below June 2000. The price increase was due to strong domestic and export demand. Cotton: The June index, at 70, was unchanged from last month but 5.4 percent below June 2000. The cotton price, at 42.7 cents per pound, was up 0.5 cents from May but 2.4 cents below June 2000. Weak domestic demand was more than offset by a reduction in government stocks. Potatoes and Dry Beans: The June index, at 106, was up 1.0 percent from May and 5.0 percent above June 2000. The all potato price, at $6.39, was up 8 cents from the previous month and 25 cents above last June. Prices were up because of the increased marketing of spring potatoes and stronger demand for fresh market fall potatoes. The dry edible bean price, at $16.40, was 20 cents below last month but $1.70 above June 2000. Fruits and Nuts: The June fruit and nut index, at 119, was up 24 percent from the previous month and 11 percent above June 2000. Strawberry prices were up due to a reduction in the fresh market supply. Commercial Vegetables: The June index, at 118, was down 19 percent from last month but unchanged from June 2000. Vegetable prices were down from last month due to seasonal increases in production levels. Livestock and Products: The June index, at 113, was up 2.7 percent from last month and up 15 percent from June 2000. Compared with a year ago, prices were higher for all milk, broilers, cattle, hogs, and calves, but lower for eggs and turkeys. Meat Animals: The June index, at 104, was up 1.0 percent from last month and up 7.2 percent from a year ago. The June hog price was $52.10 per cwt, up $1.70 from May and up $3.20 from a year ago. Slaughter data for cattle for the first three weeks of June was about 3.0 percent below a year earlier. Dairy Products: The June index, at 124, was up 5.1 percent from May and 32 percent above June 2000. The June all milk price, at $16.20 per cwt, was up $.80 from May and $3.90 above last year. May prices increased for both fluid and manufacturing grade milk. Cheese prices increased the first two weeks of June. Poultry and Eggs: The June index, at 117, was up 1.7 percent from May and 10 percent above a year ago. The June broiler price, at 41.0 cents per pound, was up 1.0 cent from May. Broiler placements in recent weeks and year-to-date have been down slightly from a year earlier. June market egg prices, at 35.8 cents per dozen, were unchanged from May. Reliability of Prices Received Estimates Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total cash receipts for the commodity. Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of 2600 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S. production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities. Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and recent historic estimates. Revisions: For most items, the current month's price represents a 3-5 day period around the mid-month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions are published in monthly issues of "Agricultural Prices". Reliability: U.S. price estimates based on probability surveys generally have a sampling error of less than one percent for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. Current methods of summarization for non-probability commodities are not designed directly to calculate sampling errors. However, analytical measures approximate the U.S. relative sampling errors at around five percent. Any nonsampling errors are attributed to such things as the inability to obtain correct information, differences in interpreting questions or definitions, mistakes in coding or processing the data, etc. Efforts are made at each step in the survey process to minimize these nonsampling errors. Prices Paid by Farmers The June Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) was 123 (1990-92=100), unchanged from May 2001 but 2.5 percent above June 2000. Production Index: The June farm production, goods, and services index, at 119, was down 0.8 percent from last month but 2.6 percent above last year. Lower prices in June for nitrogen fertilizers, hay and forages, feeder pigs, and complete feeds more than offset higher prices for feeder cattle, feed concentrates, insecticides, and mixed fertilizers. Feed: The Feed Index, at 104, was 1.9 percent less than May but 1.0 percent above last June. Since May, lower prices for hay and forages, complete feeds, feed supplements, and feed grains more than offset higher prices for feed concentrates. Livestock and Poultry: The index for livestock and poultry purchases, at 113, was 2.7 percent higher than last month and 4.6 percent above last year. Since May, higher prices for feeder cattle more than offset lower prices for feeder pigs. The June feeder cattle price at, $95.40 per cwt, was up $4.40 per cwt from the May price. Fertilizer: The Fertilizer Index, at 128, was down 2.3 percent from May but 21 percent more than June a year ago. Since May, lower prices for nitrogen fertilizers and potash and phosphate materials more than offset higher prices for mixed fertilizers. Agricultural Chemicals: The Agricultural Chemical index, at 122, was up 0.8 percent from last month and 1.7 percent above last June. Higher prices in June for insecticides more than offset lower prices for herbicides. Fuels: The Fuels Index, at 130, was down 2.3 percent from a month earlier and 1.5 percent below June 2000. Compared to last month, prices were lower for LP gas, gasoline, and diesel fuel. Farm Machinery: The June Farm Machinery Index was 143, unchanged from May but 2.9 percent above last June. Since May, prices were slightly higher for other machinery, self-propelled machinery, and tractors. Consumer Price Index: The May 2001 Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) rose 0.5 percent before seasonal adjustment to a level of 177.7 (1982-84=100). This compares to the April index of 176.9. For the 12-month period ending in May, the overall index has increased 3.6 percent. Conceptually, the average price when multiplied by quantity purchased should equal total producer expenditures for the item. Survey Procedures: The prices paid data are obtained from establishments that sell goods and services to farmers and ranchers. Annually, about 8,500 firms are randomly selected from lists by type of item sold with an average response rate in the range of 75-80 percent. Firms are asked to report the price for the specified item "most commonly bought by farmers" or that was the "volume seller". Approximately 135 items are surveyed each April to represent all production input items purchased. The survey reference period for most items is the 5 business days centered around the 15th of the month. Separate prices paid surveys are conducted for, agricultural chemicals, fuels, feed, fertilizer, machinery, and seed. Summary and Estimation Procedures: The annual April Paid Survey is summarized as a nonprobability survey. Average prices reported are aggregated to the region and U.S. level using weights available from expenditure data and other administrative sources. Price recommendations are prepared by the State Statistical Offices and Headquarters for review by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. Also, the change in price level for individual items surveyed are combined to the regional and U.S. levels, and are published as prices paid indexes referenced to a specific base period. Prices paid indexes for new autos and trucks, building materials, farm supplies, motor supplies, and marketing containers are updated based on price changes measured in selected Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) indexes. Revisions: Any revisions are published in the monthly and in annual issues of "Agricultural Prices". The basis for revision must be supported by additional data that directly affect the level of the estimate. More revisions are likely in April when separate prices paid surveys are conducted, in lieu of BLS indexes, by the USDA to measure price change. Reliability: Current methods of summarization in April are not designed directly to calculate sampling errors. However, analytical measures approximate the U.S. relative sampling errors for major items around 10 percent. Any nonsampling errors are attributed to such things as the inability to obtain correct information, differences in interpreting questions or definitions, mistakes in coding or processing the data, etc. Efforts are made at each step in the survey process to minimize these nonsampling errors. Program Change: Effective January 1, 1995, the National Agricultural Statistics Service updated the weights and changed the construction of its prices paid and received by farmers indexes. A Federal Register Notice dated October 28, 1994 discussed these program modifications. A 1990-92 reference and base period replaced the 1977 reference and 1971-73 base weight period. Five-year moving average weights replaced the current fixed 1971-73 base period weights. The 1910-14=100 price indexes, required by statute for computing parity prices, were linked forward based on the changes in the new 1990-92=100 indexes. The new indexes were constructed by multiplying the ratios of the current prices to the base period prices by the moving average weights (adjusted for seasonal marketing patterns for the prices received indexes).
