Estimates refer to July 1, 1994, January 1, 1994, and January 1, 1995. 1994 Catfish Sales Up 7 Percent Catfish growers in the 15 selected States had sales of $397 million during 1994. These sales were up 7 percent from the 1993 total of $370 million. Sales of all foodsize fish totaled $374 million, up 6 percent from last year's total of $353 million. Sales of fingerlings and fry totaled $17.6 million, compared with $8.75 million in sales during 1993. Sales of stockers totaled $5.32 million, down 28 percent from the $7.42 million in sales during 1993. Sales of brood fish previously used for breeding totaled $384 thousand, compared with $779 thousand during 1993. Direct sales to processors accounted for 96 percent of the total sales of food size fish. Sixty-seven percent of the stocker sales were to other producers. Number of Operations Down 4 Percent The total number of operations on January 1, 1995, in the 15 selected States was 1,295, down 4 percent from the July 1, 1994, total of 1,355. The number of operations in the top 4 producing States (AL, AR, LA, and MS), however, increased 4 percent from July 1, 1994. Water Acres Up 1 Percent The water surface acres being used for catfish production totaled 155,415 acres, up 1 percent from the July 1, 1994, total. Of the total acres, 4,403 are to be renovated during the period of January 1, 1995, to June 30, 1995. An additional 3,010 acres are under construction or expected to be constructed and in use by July 1, 1995. During the period of July 1, 1994, through December 31, 1994, 2,895 acres were taken out of production. Aq 2 (2-95) Inventory Numbers Catfish producers had 1.30 million broodfish on hand January 1, 1995, up 10 percent from the 1.18 million on hand January 1, 1994. All foodsize fish on hand totaled 202 million on January 1, 1995, up 7 percent from the 188 million fish on hand the previous year. Medium foodsize showed the largest increase of the three categories from January 1, 1994, rising 21 percent. Of the total number of foodsize fish, 4.54 million were large foodsize (over 3 pounds per fish), 59.2 million were medium foodsize ( 1 1/2 pounds to 3 pounds per fish), and 138 million were small foodsize fish (3/4 pound to 1 1/2 pounds per fish). Total number of stockers on hand January 1, 1995, at 554 million, were up 1 percent from the previous year's 548 million stockers. The 554 million stockers included 273 million large stockers (over 180 lbs. to 750 lbs./1000 fish) and 281 million small stockers (over 60 lbs. to 180 lbs./1000 fish). There were 725 million fingerlings on hand January 1, 1995, up 12 percent from the 649 million fingerlings on hand January 1, 1994. HDR2012000170120201951500Catfish Production Estimates Catfish Production Estimates Survey Procedures: About 1,500 operators were contacted during the first half of January by mail, telephone, and personal face-to-face interview, and 86 percent provided a usable report. An attempt was made to contact all known catfish producers during this time. States use every available source of producer names to make their list as complete as possible. Great care is exercised to ensure that all operations are accounted for in the estimates. Estimation Procedures: Sound statistical methodology is employed to derive the estimates from reported data. All data are analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation are compared to their own past operating profile and to trends from similar operations. Data for missing operations are estimated based on similar operations or historical data. Reliability: Catfish production estimates are based on a census of all known active producers and, therefore, have no sampling variability. However, estimates may be subject to errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing of the data. These errors are minimized through strict quality controls in the edit and summarization process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Revision policy: Estimates for the previous year are subject to revision when current estimates are made. Revisions are the result of late or corrected data. Definitions Used for Catfish Production: Broodfish - Fish kept for egg production, including males. Broodfish produce the fertilized eggs which go to hatcheries. The most desirable size is 3 to 10 pounds or 4 to 6 years of age. Large Foodsize - Fish weighing over 3 pounds. Medium Foodsize - Fish weighing over one and one-half pounds to 3 pounds. Small Foodsize - Fish weighing over three-fourths pound to one and one-half pounds. Large Stockers - Fish weighing over 180 pounds to 750 pounds per 1,000 fish. Small Stockers - Fish weighing over 60 pounds to 180 pounds per 1,000 fish. Fingerlings/Fry - Fish weighing 60 pounds per 1,000 fish and less. The next "Catfish Production" report will be released at 3 p.m. ET on April 28, 1995.
