U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 10 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States from feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.31 million head, up 10 percent from a year ago. This inventory accounts for 81 percent of the total United States cattle and calves on feed. The inventory included 6.61 million steers and steer calves. This group accounts for 64 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.61 million head. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.73 million. Net placements were 1.66 million. During December, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 457,000, 600-699 pounds were 609,000, 700-799 pounds were 410,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 251,000. This is the first time placements by weight have been published. Marketings of fed cattle during December totaled 1.66 million. Other disappearance totaled 68,000 during December. U.S. All Cattle on Feed All cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States on January 1, 1996, totaled 12.8 million head, up 3 percent from a year ago but down 2 percent from January 1, 1994. Special Note Minor revisions have been made in the 7-State cattle on feed data. These changes are included in the data on pages 2 and 9. Page 9 includes all historic January 7-State totals. Historic estimates included feedlots with a peak number of 1,000 head or more and not a capacity of 1,000 head or more. Next month's report will include the 7-State historic data for all months and the final 1995 estimates for the 7 and 13 States.
