U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 14 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 7.84 million head on July 1, 1996. The inventory were 14 percent below the revised 9.10 million on July 1, 1995 and 4 percent below two years ago. The inventory included 5.01 million steers and steer calves. This group accounts for 64 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 2.79 million head. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.31 million. Net placements were 1.24 million. During June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 273,000, 600-699 pounds were 342,000, 700-799 pounds were 367,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 323,000. Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 2.00 million. Other disappearance totaled 70,000 during June. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 Monthly States Down 15 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1996, in the historic 7 monthly States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 6.58 million, down 15 percent from the previous year and 5 percent below July 1, 1994. The inventory included 4.18 million steers and steer calves, down 16 percent from the previous year. This group accounts for 63 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 2.36 million head, down 14 percent from 1995. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.07 million, 21 percent below 1995 and 4 percent below 1994. Marketings during June totaled 1.70 million, 3 percent below 1996 but 4 percent above 1994. Other disappearance during June was 47,000 head, 6 percent below last year and 43 percent below 1994. U.S. All Cattle on Feed Down 12 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1996, from all feedlots in the United States, totaled 9.8 million, down 12 percent from the revised 11.2 million on July 1, 1995 and 7 percent below July 1, 1994.
