U.S. Cattle on Feed Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 7.83 million head on September 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 2.27 million. Net placements were 2.22 million. During August, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 371,000, 600-699 pounds were 438,000, 700-799 pounds were 808,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 648,000. Marketings of fed cattle during August totaled 1.93 million. Other disappearance totaled 50,000 during August. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 Monthly States Down 8 Percent Cattle on feed September 1, 1996, in the historic 7 monthly States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 6.61 million, down 8 percent from the previous year and 5 percent below September 1, 1994. Placements in feedlots during August totaled 1.97 million, 19 percent above 1995 and 12 percent above 1994. Marketings during August totaled 1.65 million, 9 percent below 1995 but 3 percent above 1994. Other disappearance during August was 37,000 head, 7 percent below last year and 27 percent below 1994.
