U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 14 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.96 million head on July 1, 1997. The inventory was 14 percent above July 1, 1996. The inventory included 5.41 million steers and steer calves, up 8 percent from the previous year. This group accounts for 60 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.50 million head, up 26 percent from 1996.
