U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 2 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.76 million head on November 1, 1998. The inventory was 2 percent below November 1, 1997 but 7 percent above November 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during October totaled 2.83 million, 3 percent below 1997 and 6 percent below 1996. Net placements were 2.78 million. During October, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 776,000, 600-699 pounds were 649,000, 700-799 pounds were 685,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 719,000. Marketings of fed cattle during October totaled 1.77 million, 2 percent below 1997 but 4 percent above 1996. Other disappearance totaled 52,000 during October, 43 percent below 1997 and 33 percent below 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Down 2 Percent Cattle on feed November 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.20 million, down 2 percent from the previous year but 8 percent above November 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during October totaled 2.40 million, 2 percent below 1997 and 6 percent below 1996. Marketings during October totaled 1.53 million, 1 percent below 1997 but 7 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during October was 45,000 head, 42 percent below 1997 and 21 percent below 1996.
