U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 4 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.03 million head on December 1, 1998. The inventory was 4 percent below December 1, 1997 but 4 percent above December 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during November totaled 2.05 million, 7 percent below 1997 and 13 percent below 1996. Net placements were 1.97 million. During November, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 740,000, 600-699 pounds were 557,000, 700-799 pounds were 437,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 317,000. Marketings of fed cattle during November totaled 1.70 million, 2 percent above 1997 and slightly above 1996. Other disappearance totaled 78,000 during November, 8 percent below 1997 and 16 percent below 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Down 3 Percent Cattle on feed December 1, 1998, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.41 million, down 3 percent from the previous year but 5 percent above December 1, 1996. Placements in feedlots during November totaled 1.73 million, 6 percent below 1997 and 12 percent below 1996. Marketings during November totaled 1.45 million, 1 percent above 1997 and 2 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during November was 63,000 head, 9 percent below 1997 and 5 percent below 1996.
