U.S. Cattle on Feed Down 5 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.63 million head on January 1, 1999. The inventory was 5 percent below January 1, 1998 but 1 percent above January 1, 1997. The inventory included 6.44 million steers and steer calves, down 5 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 61 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.14 million head, down 4 percent from 1998. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.50 million, 4 percent below 1997 and 12 percent below 1996. Net placements were 1.41 million. During December, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 396,000, 600-699 pounds were 492,000, 700-799 pounds were 362,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 246,000. Marketings of fed cattle during December totaled 1.81 million, 4 percent above 1997 and 8 percent above 1996. Other disappearance totaled 85,000 during December, the same as 1997 but 1 percent below 1996. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Down 5 Percent Cattle on feed January 1, 1999, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.02 million, down 5 percent from the previous year but 1 percent above January 1, 1997. The inventory included 5.43 million steers and steer calves, down 6 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 60 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.55 million head, down 2 percent from 1998. Placements in feedlots during December totaled 1.24 million, 5 percent below 1997 and 13 percent below 1996. Marketings during December totaled 1.55 million, 4 percent above 1997 and 10 percent above 1996. Other disappearance during December was 69,000 head, 1 percent above both 1997 and 1996. U.S. All Cattle on Feed Down 3 Percent Cattle on feed January 1, 1999, from all feedlots in the United States, totaled 13.2 million, down 3 percent from the 13.6 million on January 1, 1998 but slightly above January 1, 1997.
