U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 3 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.02 million head on May 1, 1999. The inventory was 3 percent above May 1, 1998 and 1 percent above May 1, 1997. Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.67 million, 5 percent above 1998 and 8 percent above 1997. Net placements were 1.57 million. During April, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 283,000, 600-699 pounds were 389,000, 700-799 pounds were 567,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 431,000. Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 1.93 million, 3 percent above 1998 and 1 percent above 1997. Other disappearance totaled 104,000 during April, 13 percent above 1998 and 6 percent above 1997. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 3 Percent Cattle on feed May 1, 1999, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.57 million, up 3 percent from the previous year and 1 percent above May 1, 1997. Placements in feedlots during April totaled 1.43 million, 6 percent above 1998 and 11 percent above 1997. Marketings during April totaled 1.67 million, 4 percent above 1998 and up 1 percent from 1997. Other disappearance during April was 78,000 head, 28 percent above 1998 and 15 percent above 1997.
