U.S. Cattle on Feed Up 4 Percent Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 9.56 million head on July 1, 1999. The inventory was 4 percent above July 1, 1998 and 7 percent above July 1, 1997. The inventory included 5.73 million steers and steer calves, up 5 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 60 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.78 million head, up 3 percent from 1998. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.78 million, 14 percent above 1998 and 24 percent above 1997. Net placements were 1.72 million. During June, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 295,000, 600-699 pounds were 372,000, 700-799 pounds were 629,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 488,000. Marketings of fed cattle during June totaled 2.14 million, 5 percent above 1998 and 1997. Other disappearance totaled 63,000 during June, 12 percent below 1998 but 5 percent above 1997. Cattle on Feed in Historic 7 States Up 4 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1999, in the historic 7 States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 8.17 million, up 4 percent from the previous year and 6 percent above July 1, 1997. The inventory included 4.84 million steers and steer calves, up 5 percent from the previous year. This group accounted for 59 percent of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 3.30 million head, up 3 percent from 1998. Placements in feedlots during June totaled 1.51 million, 15 percent above 1998 and 23 percent above 1997. Marketings during June totaled 1.83 million, 6 percent above 1998 and 5 percent above 1997. Other disappearance during June was 44,000 head, 14 percent below 1998 but the same as 1997. U.S. All Cattle on Feed Up 4 Percent Cattle on feed July 1, 1999, from all feedlots in the United States, totaled 11.4 million, up 4 percent from the 11.0 million on July 1, 1998 and 5 percent above July 1, 1997.
