HDR1012000140030923961500Citrus Fruit Citrus Production 1 Percent Higher in 1995-96 Citrus production for the 1995-96 season totaled 16.0 million tons, 1 percent more than the previous season and 10 percent higher than the 1993-94 season. The 1995-96 crop is the second largest on record due primarily to very good Florida and California orange production and Florida's large grapefruit crop. Florida orange production was the third highest on record, down 1 percent from last year. A 6 percent increase in acreage was offset by a decreased yield per acre resulting in the slightly smaller Florida orange crop. Orange production in California was up 18 percent from last season. Orange acreage increased 3 percent in California and yield per acre broke its downward trend, rising 15 percent. The California Navel orange crop was up 9 percent from last year's crop. Texas orange and grapefruit acreage continued to increase from the December 1989 freeze, but production was down for both Texas citrus crops. Arizona lemon, orange, and grapefruit acreage was down from a year ago, but lemon and orange production was higher. In the 1995-96 season, Florida accounted for 74 percent of the U.S. citrus production, California totaled 23 percent, Arizona produced 2 percent, and Texas accounted for 1 percent. Value of Citrus Crop Increases The value of the 1995-96 U.S. citrus crop increased 10 percent from last season to $2.61 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). Increased citrus supplies and much higher orange prices resulted in the higher overall value of the citrus crop. Value of production was higher for oranges, tangerines, Temples, limes, and K-Early Citrus and lower for grapefruit, lemons, and tangelos. Total citrus crop values were up in every state. U.S. average prices for early, midseason, and Navel oranges increased 6 percent to $5.93 per box. Valencia orange prices increased 23 percent to $8.38 per box. Although the grapefruit price per box, at $4.63, was slightly higher at the U.S. level, value of production was down due to the smaller crop. Lemon prices, down 13 percent from last season, averaged $9.69 per box. The average tangerines price dropped 7 percent to $14.13 per box. The revised production and utilization estimates in this report were based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for 1995-96 California Valencia oranges and California grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing season was not complete at publication time. Marketing Year Average Prices and Value of Production State level marketing year average (MYA), or price per box, for fresh and processed sales are the weighted average of monthly sales that occur during a crop's marketing season, adjusted to the packinghouse-door level. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = (State Process Value * State Box Weight) (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = (State All Value * State Box Weight) (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) These formulas are also applicable to the calculation of the California all grapefruit MYA's prior to the 1993-94 season to weight the Desert Valley and other areas prices. For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the state's values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
