HDR1012000140030923971500CITRUS FRUITS National September 1997 Agricultural Statistics Service Washington, D.C. Fr Nt 7 (97) Citrus Fruits 1997 Summary Record Large Citrus Production in 1996-97 Citrus production for the 1996-97 season totaled a record large 17.3 million tons, 5 percent higher than the previous record of 16.5 million tons produced in the 1979-80 season. The 1996-97 production is 10 percent higher than last year and 9 percent higher than the 1994-95 season. Record orange and grapefruit production in Florida contributed to most of the record total citrus production. Florida accounted for 76 percent of the U.S. citrus production, California totaled 21 percent, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 3 percent. Florida's orange production of 226 million boxes was up 11 percent from last year's total. A bearing acreage increase of 5 percent combined with a 20 boxes per acre yield increase to result in the record large production. Florida's grapefruit production of 55.8 million boxes topped last year's level by 7 percent. Increased bearing acreage of 5 percent and a slightly higher yield per acre led to the record production. Florida's total citrus production was up 11 percent from last year and up 9 percent from the 1994-95 season. Orange production in California was up 17 percent from a year ago, and its grapefruit production increased 1 percent from the 1995-96 season. California's 1996-97 total citrus production was up 10 percent from the previous season and up 13 percent from two years ago. Orange and grapefruit acreage in Texas continued to rebound from the December 1989 freeze, with production increases of 51 percent in oranges and 16 percent in grapefruit. Arizona's total citrus production was down 44 percent from the 1995-96 season. Value of Citrus Crop Increases in 1996-97 The value of the 1996-97 U.S. citrus crop increased 6 percent from last season to just under $2.66 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent), but it was short of the record value of just over $2.66 billion set in the 1988-89 season. A 4 percent decrease in the value of citrus on a per ton basis kept the total value from a record level, despite record supplies of citrus fruit. Total value of production was higher for oranges, lemons, tangelos, and tangerines, but lower for grapefruit, K-Early Citrus, limes, and Temples. The price decrease of 13 percent for Florida oranges more than offset the 11 percent price increase for California oranges. Despite the 20 percent increase of grapefruit prices in California, the total value of the U.S. grapefruit crop was down 7 percent from last year caused by Florida's 19 percent drop in grapefruit prices. Lemon prices increased 35 percent overall, leading to a 17 percent increase in the value of production. Tangerine value of production was up 6 percent from last season, with price increases in Arizona and California more than offsetting a price decrease in Florida. The revised production and utilization estimates were based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for the 1996-97 California Valencia oranges and grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing season was not complete at publication time. Marketing Year Average Prices and Value of Production State level marketing year average (MYA), or price per box, for fresh and processed sales are the weighted average of monthly sales that occur during a crop's marketing season, adjusted to the packinghouse-door level. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = (State Process Value * State Box Weight) (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = (State All Value * State Box Weight) (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) These formulas are also applicable to the calculation of the California all grapefruit MYA's prior to the 1993-94 season to weight the Desert Valley and other areas prices. For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the state's values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
