United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Fr Nt 3-1 (99) Citrus Fruits 1999 Summary September 1999 Citrus Utilization Down 23 Percent, Value Down 1 Percent Citrus production for the 1998-99 season totaled 13.7 million tons, down 23 percent from the record large 17.8 million tons produced last season and 21 percent lower than the 1996-97 season. Both Florida and California had considerable declines in orange production due to adverse weather conditions. Florida accounted for 79 percent of the U.S. citrus production, California totaled 17 percent, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 4 percent. Florida's orange production of 186 million boxes was down 24 percent from the previous season's record large crop. Excessive rain during the spring and intense heat in the early summer led to the decline. A record high frozen concentrated orange juice (FCOJ) yield was established for the 1998-99 season. The 1.63 gallon per box yield, at 42.0 degrees Brix, surpassed the previous record high of 1.58 gallons per box from the 1992-93 season. Florida's grapefruit utilization of 47.1 million boxes was down 5 percent from last season's utilization. Less bearing acreage of 9 percent contributed to the decrease in utilization. Florida's total citrus utilization was down 20 percent from last year and down 18 percent from the 1996-97 season. In California, a late December freeze damaged the citrus crops in Central Valley. Navel oranges were affected the most with a decline of 52 percent from 1997-98. California's all orange production was down 45 percent from the previous season. Grapefruit production was not as adversely affected by the freeze and decreased only 6 percent from the 1997-98 season. California's total citrus production was down 37 percent from the previous season and down 35 percent from two years ago. Orange and grapefruit acreage in Texas continued to rebound from the December 1989 freeze. Orange production decreased 6 percent from a year ago, but grapefruit production was up 27 percent. Arizona's total citrus production was up 26 percent from last season, attributable primarily to lemons, which were up 33 percent. The value of the 1998-99 U.S. citrus crop decreased 1 percent from last season to $2.57 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). Total value of production was lower for oranges, but was higher for all other citrus. Orange value of production dropped 8 percent from a year ago, as higher prices offset the much larger decline in utilization. California and Florida values of orange production fell 24 and 3 percent, respectively. The total value of the U.S. grapefruit crop was up 26 percent from last year due to higher grapefruit prices in every state. Lemon prices increased more than $2.00 per box, leading to an 8 percent increase in the value of production. Tangerine value of production was up 23 percent from last season, with considerable price increases across the U.S. The revised production and utilization estimates were based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances were made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for the 1998-99 California Valencia oranges and grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing season was not complete at publication time. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different state box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = Sum(State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = Sum(State Process Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = Sum(State All Value * State Box Weight) divided by Sum(State All Boxes * State Box Weight) For commodities with the same box weights across all states, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of state's values by the sum of states' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the state's values for that commodity. The state level value of production for each commodity is computed as follows: Fresh Market Value = Fresh Market MYAP * Fresh Market Boxes Process Market Value = Process Market MYAP * Process Market Boxes "All" Sales Value = Fresh Market Value + Process Market Value Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level by deducting sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
