Florida accounted for 74 percent of total U.S. citrus production, California totaled 23 percent, while Texas and Arizona produced the remaining 3 percent. Florida's orange production of 203 million boxes is down 12 percent from the previous season. Grapefruit utilization in Florida, at 38.7 million boxes, is down 17 percent from last season's utilization. Florida's total citrus utilization decreased 13 percent from the previous season. Bearing acreage, at 718,100 acres, is the lowest since the 1993-94 season. California increased utilized citrus production by 21 percent from the 2001-02 season. California's all orange production, at 62.0 million boxes, is 20 percent higher than the previous season. Grapefruit production, at 5.60 million boxes, is down 5 percent from the 2001-02 season. Utilized production of citrus in Texas is down 6 percent from the 2001-02 season. Orange production decreased 10 percent from the previous season and grapefruit production is down 4 percent. Arizona's total citrus production is down 1 percent from last season. Utilized production of oranges is down 10 percent and grapefruit down 19 percent, while lemons are up 7 percent. The value of the 2002-03 U.S. citrus crop is down 12 percent from last season to $2.30 billion (packinghouse-door equivalent). Total value of production for 2002-03 is lower for all types of citrus, except tangelos. Orange value of production decreased 13 percent from last season and grapefruit value decreased 12 percent. Overall higher prices and an abbreviated season for tangelos, resulted in a 24 percent increase in the value of production. Lemons, tangerines, and Temples values are down 11 percent, 8 percent, and 11 percent, respectively. Overall comparisons discussed above are based on like fruit types. Limes and K-Early Citrus are not included in U.S. comparisons because estimates were discontinued in the 2002-03 season. The revised production and utilization estimates are based on all data available at the end of the marketing season, including information from marketing orders, shipments, and processor records. Allowances are made for recorded local utilization and home use. Estimates for the 2002-03 California Valencia oranges and grapefruit are preliminary, since the marketing season is not complete at publication time. Revisions to the utilized production estimates for all citrus for the 2002-03 season will be available in the April 2004 Crop Production release. Citrus Prices Revised State and U.S. monthly average prices and equivalent returns, and marketing year average prices for the 2000-01, 2001-02, and 2002-03 citrus crops are shown on the following pages. Revised monthly prices refer to all fruit sold in a given month regardless of the crop year in which the fruit was harvested. Marketing year average prices refer to the prices received by growers for the entire marketing season for any one crop year. The crop year 2002-03 as shown on all citrus tables in this publication refers to the crop which bloomed in 2002 and was marketed during the 2002-03 season. For example, the 2002-03 marketing year average price received by California growers for tangerines refers to marketings from October 2002 through May 2003. In some years the season may vary a month or two but a price was estimated only for those months with sufficient movement. Monthly and marketing year average prices are weighted by box size at the U.S. level for grapefruit, oranges, and tangerines. See page 46 for approximate net contents per box at the State level. Citrus prices are based on weighted average f.o.b. packed prices received for fresh fruit and weighted average prices received at the processing plant door for processing fruit. Equivalent returns for fresh and processed fruit are calculated at the packinghouse-door level and on-tree level by deducting hauling, picking, sorting, grading, packing, cooling, marketing, and other costs from the two base prices. In some cases, this results in negative returns. The "all" sales MYA price is derived by dividing the "all" sales value by the "all" sales boxes. MYA prices at the U.S. level for commodities with different State box weights are computed as follows: Fresh Market MYAP = (State Fresh Value * State Box Weight) (State Fresh Boxes * State Box Weight) Process Market MYAP = (State Process Value * State Box Weight) (State Process Boxes * State Box Weight) "All" Sales MYAP = (State All Value * State Box Weight) (State All Boxes * State Box Weight) For commodities with the same box weights across all States, the U.S. MYA's are derived by dividing the sum of States' values by the sum of States' boxes. U.S. value of production for a given commodity is the sum of the State's values for that commodity. USDA Data Users' Forum October 20, 2003 Holiday Inn Mart Plaza Chicago, Illinois The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service will hold a public forum for open exchange between Federal agricultural statistics agencies and data users on October 20, 2003. Agency representatives will provide updates on pending changes in the various statistical and information programs and will seek comments from data users.
