The number of active cotton gins for crop year 1995 is 1,275, compared to 1,306 in 1994, and 1,364 for the 1993 crop year. Bureau of the Census Cotton Information Cotton consumed during the month ending January 31, 1996, amounted to 738,878 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of January was 622,719 bales, and the total in public storage and in compresses was 8,316,886 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,776,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 1,578,100 bales These and other data were published in "Census Bulletin M22P(96)-01", dated February 23, 1996.
