The number of active cotton gins for crop year 1997 was 1,155, compared to 1,214 in 1996, and 1,274 for the 1995 crop year. Bureau of the Census Cotton Information Cotton consumed during the month ending January 31, 1998, amounted to 848,580 bales. Cotton on hand in consuming establishments at the end of February was 612,634 bales, and the total in public storage and in compresses was 10,918,785 bales. Active consuming cotton spindles totaled 2,606,000, and the quantity of domestic cotton exported, excluding linters, was 666,100 bales.
