Cotton Ginnings 1995: A total of 17.5 million running bales were ginned during the 1995 season, 9 percent less than 1994's record high ginnings of 19.1 million bales. The crop was characterized by drought, high temperatures, and insects in the Delta and Southeast regions. California was subject to cool, wet spring weather, delaying plantings and crop development. There were 1,274 active cotton gins during the 1995 season, down from the 1,306 that operated in 1994. Although there were only 2 percent fewer active gins compared to 1994, the smaller crop and continued changes to high-speed ginning equipment, allowed gins to keep pace with the harvest. There were 344 gins processing more than 20,000 bales in 1995, 86 of these processed at least 40,000 bales. Cotton, 1995 Final: All cotton production in the United States totaled 17.9 million bales in 1995, 9 percent below 1994's record high production. The 1995 output was the fourth largest crop on record. Upland cotton production, at 17.5 million bales, was 9 percent less than the previous year, while American-Pima production totaled 367,600 bales, up 9 percent from 1994. The area planted to all cotton totaled 16.9 million acres, up 23 percent from 1994, and the largest since 1956. Harvested area, at 16.0 million acres, was up 20 percent from the previous year and the largest since 1955. Abandonment totaled 5 percent compared with 3 percent in 1994. Yields for the U.S. averaged 537 pounds, down from the record high 708 pounds per acre realized in 1994. The Delta States' 1995 output decreased 14 percent from the 1994 production, to 5.92 million bales and was subject to drought, extreme high temperatures, and insect infestations. Plantings were delayed early in the season due to excessive rainfall. In June, the pace equaled the average. Boll counts and weights were among the lowest of the past 10 years, resulting in a low yielding crop. Yields averaged 602 pounds, down 216 pounds from one year earlier. Production in the Southeast, at 3.61 millin bales, was up 4 percent from 1994, due to a 58 percent increase in harvested acreage. Yields averaged 539 pounds, 282 pounds less than the previous year. Hot, dry conditions caused poor crop development, and excessive rains during the fall in the Carolina's delayed harvest, and caused high boll loss. The Western States Upland production totaled 3.18 million bales, an 11 percent decrease from 1994's output, although harvested acreage increased 9 percent from a year earlier. Early season rains and cool temperatures in both States delayed plantings, which resulted in lower yields. Boll numbers and weights were much less than anticipated earlier in the season. The Texas-Oklahoma Upland production, at 4.58 million bales, was 11 percent below the previous year's output. Plantings were delayed because of dry conditions, and in early June, heavy rains and hail caused replanting. A cool September with the highest rainfall in 60 years in the West Texas growing region, lowered potential yields from earlier expectations. Texas producers harvested 90 percent of the planted acreage, compared to 94 percent 1994 and 91 percent in 1993. Yields for these two States decreased 88 pounds from one year earlier, to 363 pounds. Cottonseed: Cottonseed production in 1995 totaled 6.85 million tons, down 10 percent from 1994.
