Decreased crop potential in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington do not offset the record high production in Wisconsin. The Massachusetts crop is forecast at 1.95 million barrels, down fractionally from last year and 4 percent more than 1993. Crop prospects are excellent. Mild conditions last winter caused limited damage, and bloom was average or above, with an average set. Berry size is reported as medium. Early varieties are doing better than the later maturing ones, and insect and disease damage has been light. Dry conditions have hampered crop development, but recent rains are expected to rejuvenate the crop. New Jersey expects a crop of 520,000 barrels, 7 percent less than last year but 35 percent more than 1993. Weather conditions have been good for cranberry production. There was very little winter or frost damage. Bloom and fruit set were about average, with berry size also average. No unusual problems were reported. In Oregon, the crop is forecast at 260,000 barrels, 21 percent less than last year's crop but 67 percent more than 1993. Crop prospects are poor. Oregon's cranberry crop suffered hail damage to blooms in late-March and April, and pollination was poor. Early season weather prompted below average fruit set. Development is behind normal and insect pressure is significant. The Washington crop is forecast at 183,000 barrels, 9 percent less than last year but 34 percent more than 1993. Generally the crop looks good. Western Washington state had another mild winter and little to no frost damage. Cold, wet conditions in early spring caused a late bloom with blooms still on some bogs in late-July. Berry size is average, with some reports of small fruit. Black vine weevil problems continue to plague growers, with some entire bogs lost. Fire worm and girdler are also a problem. If dry, warm conditions continue, crop prospects are expected to improve. Production in Wisconsin is forecast at a record high 1.79 million barrels, 9 percent more 1994 and 32 percent above 1993. Increased production is due mostly to expanded area for harvest and crop prospects are excellent. Growers reported good to very good set, good pollination, and adequate water supply. Extensive heat in June and July will reduce the crop for some growers. Fr Nt 4 (8-95) 1994 Production Up 19 Percent; Value Up 16 Percent Production of cranberries in the United States in 1994 totaled 4.68 million barrels, up 19 percent from 1993. The area harvested, at 31,100 acres, increased 6 percent from the previous year. The average yield of 150.5 barrels per acre was 17.2 barrels per acre more than the previous year. The average price per barrel decreased $1.40 from 1993, to $48.80. Value of production increased 16 percent to $228 million.
