HDR1012000170060426961500FLORICULTURE CROPS 1995 SUMMARY Wholesale Value of Sales up 1 Percent The value of floriculture crops continued to increase in 1995 but at a slower pace. The total value of all crops at wholesale for all growers over $10,000 of sales is estimated at $3.27 billion for 1995 compared with $3.25 billion in 1994. California continues as the leading state with crops valued at $672 million. However, total value fell 4 percent below the value of floriculture in 1994. Florida continues to increase its output as the 1995 value reached $613 million for a 2 percent gain. These two states account for 39 percent of the total value in the 36 states surveyed. Of the 36 states surveyed, 23 recorded higher value and 13 showed decreases. The largest gains were in Mississippi, Colorado, South Carolina, and Utah. The biggest declines were in Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma. The top five states, California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Ohio accounted for $1.80 billion, 55 percent of the total value. When compared with the previous year, however, the total value in these states was up only minimally, $3.72 million. Growers with sales exceeding $100,000 for the year accounted for 92 percent of the total, at $3.02 billion. This size group includes only 46 percent of the total number of growers. Covered area in production increased 4 percent in 1995 at a total of 843 million square feet. Greenhouse space accounted for 58 percent of the total at 488 million square feet. That area was 5 percent above a year earlier. Shade and temporary cover accounted for the rest, 2 percent above 1994. Glass greenhouse area fell 8 percent from the previous year to 70.1 million square feet. That drop was offset by an 11 percent increase in film plastic structures as that category jumped to 307 million square feet. Open ground totaled 27,155 acres, 101 acres above the amount for 1994. The number of growers continued to fall as the count in 1995 was 10,022, down 241 from the number in 1994. The number of growers over $100,000 in sales declined as it went from 4,631 in 1994 to 4,616 in 1995. There was a slight shift into the largest sales category as the group with sales over $500,000 rose by 29 but operations between $100,000 and $499,999 lost 44. The only other size group showing increased growers was in the sales range of $50,000 to $99,999. The number of growers in this range increased 55 to 2,139 in 1995. The largest drop occurred in the smallest size group, those between $10,000 and $19,999, as there were 188 fewer growers recorded. The use of hired workers showed a marked decline in 1995. A total of 7,869 operations reported hired workers during the year compared with 8,384 reporting hired workers in 1994. Overall, 79 percent of the operations used some hired workers in 1995 compared with 82 percent in 1994. The average number of hired workers used during peak times was lower in all size groups. The total value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding the $100,000 minimum sales level reached $3.02 billion in 1995, a 1 percent increase over the $2.99 billion for 1994. Bedding and garden plants lead the group to this slight climb with a 4 percent increase to a wholesale value of $1.32 billion. Flowering potted plants supported the increase also with a 2 percent increase over the previous year to $679 million and foliage showed a 1 percent higher value at $496 million. Offsetting those increases were an 8 percent decline in the value of cut flowers and a 6 percent decline in the value of cut greens. Bedding and garden plant production continued strongly for growers in 1995. The number of growers producing this product was 3,229 in 1995, up 15 from the number in 1994. The wholesale value of bedding and garden plants totaled $1.32 billion in 1995, 3 percent above 1994. This level marks three consecutive increases for the 36 states included in the survey since 1992. Most selected items were higher in 1995 with hanging basket Petunias up the most, 57 percent. Flats of New Guineas and Petunias each marked 28 percent increases as both showed marked increases in volume sold and slight price increases. Following were Impatiens flats, potted New Guineas, and hanging basket Geraniums recording 24 percent increases, also due mostly to increased sales. Decreased values were realized in the Geranium flats, Other Flowering Hanging Baskets, Potted Geraniums (seed), Potted Petunias, and the All Other Flowering and Foliar type plants in both flats and pots. Of the selected plants in the survey, potted Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) returned the highest wholesale value to growers, $140 million compared with $130 million in the year before. Impatien flats provided the second largest amount, $104 million. The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers fell 8 percent in 1995 after seeing a 4 percent jump from 1993 to 1994. The total value for all cut flowers, at $409 million dropped 4 percent below the 1993 total value. Roses decreased most with a total decrease in value of 16 percent. Hybrid Tea roses were off 15 percent while Sweetheart roses were down 28 percent. Both types of roses showed large declines in the area in production. Gladioli were off 9 percent despite an average price increase of 3.6 cents per spike. The area devoted to Gladioli was down 3 percent. Carnation production was at about the same level as a year earlier but the value was 1 percent higher. The value for Standard Carnations fell 4 percent based on 2 percent fewer sold and a slight decrease for the price per bloom. That decrease was offset by an 11 percent increase for Miniature Carnations. Chrysanthemums increased 3 percent in value from the previous year. All other unspecified cut flowers experienced a 3 percent decline of value in 1995 with a 2 percent reduction in the area in production. Of the selected cut flowers in the survey, most expect one to 5 percent less area in production in 1996. The only increases showing are for Gladioli and all other unspecified cut flowers. There were 39 fewer growers of cut flowers in 1995 as the number dropped to 785. Potted flowering plants regained some of the value lost between 1993 and 1994. The 1995 value totaled $679 million, 2 percent above the $662 million posted in 1994. Most of the selected categories recorded higher earnings with the largest increase, 24 percent, for Other Lilies. The value of Cyclamens rose 13 percent followed by Azaleas showing a 9 percent gain. The largest single contributor, Poinsettias, recorded a 1 percent increase over the previous year. The number sold actually fell about 1 percent but the area devoted to growing them was up 3 percent. The price received for Poinsettias in less than 5 inch pots recovered to near the 1993 level at $1.88. The price of larger pots continued to show strength with a 7 cent increase to $4.12 per pot. The area devoted to all flowering potted plants increased 6 percent in 1995 and the number of pots sold increased 3 percent. Space for Other Lilies jumped 30 percent, in 1995 while Cyclamen and the All Other group received 16 percent more space. African Violets were grown in 15 percent less area and space for Potted Florists Chrysanthemums was 5 percent lower. For 1996, growers intend to produce about 2 percent more pots for the entire group. Increases are expected in Poinsettias, Cyclamens, and Kalanchoes. Decreased output is planned for Chrysanthemums, Azaleas, and All Lilies with little change for African Violets. The number of growers of potted flowering plants only increased by 4 in 1995, to 2,598. The value of foliage plant production continued upward in 1995, but not at the pace seen in 1994. Total value rose 1 percent to $496 million. Florida continues to show strength in this segment as the value of sales in that state was up 5 percent following the 32 percent jump from 1993 to 1994. This category lost the most producers of all the types. In 1995 there were 1,640 producers compared with 1,766 in 1994. Cut cultivated greens decreased 6 percent in value in 1995 to $113 million which also was 3 percent below the value of 1993. The average price of Leatherleaf Ferns dropped a penny to offset a 10 percent increase in acreage. Area in production for the entire category was up 10 percent from a year earlier and intentions indicate another 1 percent increase of acreage in 1996. The number of growers increased by 6 in 1995 to 229. Survey Procedures and Definitions Survey Procedures The floriculture statistics presented in this publication are compiled from interviews of all known growers of floriculture crops in 36 selected states. Growers must have annual gross sales of all floriculture crops exceeding $10,000 to be included in this survey. Data collection began about January 1 and extended through February. A copy of the questionnaire used is included in the back of this report. The data in this report are comparable to data included in "Floriculture Crops" summaries from 1991 to the present. Beginning with the 1991 summary, details for individual crops on area in production, quantity sold, price, and value were collected only from growers whose gross sales exceeded $100,000. However, the summary tables for Growers and Growing Area, and Growers by Size of Reported Gross Sales include all growers with sales of $10,000 or more for these years. One point of variation occurs between the 1991 summary and later years. Eight states were added to the estimating program in 1992. Prior to 1992, 28 states were surveyed to collect floriculture information. Data for 1992 were computed to show 36 state totals and 28 state totals to enable some comparisons to be made between 1991 and 1992 data. Users of these data should consider the differences when comparing data from 1991-95 with data in earlier reports. Beginning with the 1994 summary, breakouts for Cyclamens and Kalanchoes were added to the group of Potted Flowering Plants. Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens, and Petunias were added to Bedding/Garden Flats, Baskets and Pots. Geraniums were added to Bedding/Garden Baskets. With the separation of these items, the tables in earlier reports for Other Potted Flowering Plants, Other Flowering and Foliar Type Bedding Plant Flats, Other Potted Flowering and Foliar Type Bedding Plants, and Flowering Hanging Baskets will not be comparable. Previously, these itemized flowers were included in the "All Other" category. Survey Definitions Floriculture Crop: Any item considered in the category of bedding/garden plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, or foliage plants. Data for flowering potted plants and foliage plants represent only items intended for indoor or patio use. Refer to the copy of the questionnaire in the back of this report for specific examples. Commercial Grower: Any operation which produces any commodity included above and whose gross sales total $10,000 or more during the calendar year. Area in Production (by crop): The gross area used, including walkways and aisles. All area used to grow a crop is counted, including area under glass, plastic, cloth, lath, and outdoors. The area used for each filling is included if more than one of the same crop is produced during the year. Area devoted to potted foliage and cut cultivated greens is counted only once even though some of the area may be refilled with additional plants. Growing Area (Total): Growing area, by type of cover, includes the gross square feet of physical space available to grow all nursery and floriculture crops produced by the operations surveyed. It is not limited to actual area used and does not include multiple uses of the same area. Quantity Sold: Sales represent both retail and wholesale quantities sold in the calendar year shown. Flowers, plants, or materials purchased from others for immediate resale are excluded from the totals in this report. Expanded Wholesale Value: Value of all crops grown, at wholesale, for growers above $10,000. This figure is calculated using two parts. One part uses survey totals of wholesale value of sales as reported by growers with $100,000 or more of sales in floriculture crops. The second part is a calculated value for growers which fall between the $10,000 minimum and the $100,000 level. The value is derived by multiplying the number of growers in each range of sales by the dollar value of the midpoint of each range. The two components are then summed to provide state and 36 state totals. Value of Sales at Wholesale: The value of all crops, except potted foliage, on a gross wholesale basis before deductions for sales commissions, transportation charges, or other similar deductions. The value shown is an equivalent value of all sales at a wholesale price. It is derived by multiplying the average wholesale price by the total quantity sold. The value of sales for potted foliage plants is on a net sales basis. This value is determined by subtracting the reported cost of plant materials purchased from the value of all retail and wholesale sales. The data in this report for all bedding plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, and foliage are summarized only from growers with $100,000 or more in sales, during 1995. The data summarized in tables showing grower numbers, hired workers, and growing area represent all growers having sales of $10,000 or more.
