Sp Cr 6-1(97) Floriculture Crops 1996 Summary Wholesale Value of Sales Up 3 Percent The value of floriculture crops continued upward in 1996. The total value of all crops at wholesale for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $3.42 billion for 1996 compared with $3.33 billion in 1995. California continues as the leading state with crops valued at $724 million. Total value for California rose 5 percent above 1995's value. Florida continues to expand its output as the 1996 value reached $660 million for a 5 percent gain. These two states account for 40 percent of the total value in the 36 states surveyed. Of the 36 states surveyed, 21 recorded higher value and 15 showed decreases. The top five states, California, Florida, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio accounted for $1.90 billion, 56 percent of the total value. Growers with sales exceeding $100,000 for the year accounted for 93 percent of the total, at $3.17 billion. This size group comprises only 47 percent of the total number of growers. Covered area in floriculture crop production was down minimally in 1996 at nearly 843 million square feet. Greenhouse space accounted for 55 percent of the total covered area with 464 million square feet. That area was 5 percent below a year earlier. Film plastic structures dropped 5 percent to 292 million square feet while rigid plastic covers declined 7 percent to 102 million square feet. Glass greenhouse area fell 1 percent from the previous year to 69.5 million square feet. Shade and temporary cover constituted the remaining 379 million square feet of covered area, 7 percent above 1995. Open ground expanded to 31,100 acres, 5 percent over 1995's total. The number of growers continued to fall as the count in 1996 was 9,765, down 393 from the number in 1995. The number of growers with $100,000 or more in sales declined from 4,657 in 1995 to 4,614 in 1996. There was a slight shift into the largest sales category as the group with sales of $500,000 or more rose by 48 but operations between $100,000 and $499,999 lost 91. All other size groups showed decreased grower counts. The largest drop occurred in the $20,000 to $39,999 size group, as there were 172 fewer growers recorded. The use of hired workers increased in 1996. A total of 8,242 operations reported hired workers during the year compared with 7,974 reporting hired workers a year earlier. Overall, 84 percent of the operations used some hired workers in 1996 compared with 78 percent in 1995. The average number of hired workers used during peak times equaled the previous year's average of 13.8 workers. The largest growth in average number of workers occurred in the $50,000 to $99,999 size group where 6.1 workers were used compared to 5.0 workers in 1995. The total value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding the $100,000 minimum sales level reached $3.17 billion in 1996, a 3 percent increase over the$3.07 billion for 1995. Values for all categories rose in 1996. Bedding and garden plants, the largest contributor, recorded a 4 percent increase in wholesale value to $1.41 billion. Flowering potted plants recorded a modest 1 percent boost over the previous year reaching $686 million. Foliage showed a 2 percent higher value at $508 million. Values of cut flowers and cut cultivated greens grew 5 percent and 7 percent, respectively. California lead the states with 22 percent of the total value for reported crops. Florida was second with 20 percent, while Texas, Michigan, and Ohio rounded out the top five states. Michigan and Ohio fell below last year's totals as California, Florida and Texas posted increases. Growers posted another increase in bedding and garden plant production in 1996. The number of growers producing bedding and garden plants was 3,254 in 1996, up 7 from the number in 1995. The wholesale value of bedding and garden plants totaled $1.41 billion, 4 percent above 1995. This represents 45 percent of the wholesale value of all the reported crops. California, Michigan, Texas, Florida and Ohio accounted for 44 percent of the total bedding and garden value. Of the specified bedding plants in the survey, potted Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) returned the highest wholesale value to growers, $132 million compared with $146 million in the year before. Impatiens flats provided the second largest amount, $108 million. The value of bedding and garden flats reached $728 million, 4 percent higher than the previous year. Flats represent 51 percent of the total value for bedding and garden plants. Geranium flats showed the largest gain at 18 percent higher than 1995. New Guinea Impatiens value decreased 15 percent while Impatiens (I. wallerana) and Petunias inched slightly upward. Other unspecified flowering and foliar flats, which account for 57 percent of the total flats, showed a 4 percent gain. Vegetable flats increased 7 percent in value above last year. Potted bedding and garden plants tallied $508 million, representing 36 percent of the total. This is up 3 percent from 1995. Decreases in potted Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) and Impatiens were offset by increases in Hardy Garden Mums, New Guinea Impatiens, Petunias, Vegetables and Other Flowering and Foliar plants. Lower quantities of pots sold for Geraniums from cuttings lead to the 10 percent drop in value. Increases in prices for Geraniums from seed were countered by a decrease in number of pots sold. Flowering hanging baskets accounted for $177 million, 13 percent of the bedding and garden total. All hanging basket items were higher in 1996 with Petunias up the most at 25 percent. Prices were stronger for Geraniums, New Guinea Impatiens, Petunias and Other Flowering Hanging Baskets. The price reduction in Impatien baskets was overpowered by a 13 percent increase in the quantity sold. The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers expanded 5 percent in 1996 after seeing a 4 percent fall from 1994 to 1995. The total value for all cut flowers, at $447 million is the highest since 1992. California's value reached $289 million, 65 percent of the total for cut flowers. Although prices were up 2.2 cents per stem for Hybrid Tea roses, lower sales resulted in a 7 percent decrease in value from 1995. Value of Sweetheart roses climbed 4 percent over last year. The area devoted to Gladioli was up slightly, but decreases in quantity sold and average wholesale price lead to a 7 percent decline in value. The value for Standard Chrysanthemums rebounded upward to 5 percent over last year, but was more than offset by a 12 percent tumble in Pompon Chrysanthemum value. Carnations showed the largest fall in value with a 27 percent decrease. Standard Carnations and Miniature Carnations dropped 25 and 31 percent, respectively. Value of all other unspecified cut flowers jumped up 20 percent in 1996 with a 1 percent boost in the area in production. There were 35 fewer growers of cut flowers in 1996 as the number dropped to 763. Potted flowering plants value totaled $686 million, 1 percent above the $681 million posted in 1995. The largest single contributor, Poinsettias, recorded a 1 percent increase over the previous year. Higher values were received for Easter Lilies, Cyclamens, and Kalanchoes while African Violets, Florist Azaleas and Florist Chrysanthemums dropped in value. Potted Orchids were reported separately in the survey for the first time this year. Previously, Orchids were included in the "All Other" category for potted flowering plants. Beginning in 1996, estimates for Other Lilies were not published separately. Data were included in the Other Potted Flowering plant's category. Value for Other Potted Flowering Plants, including Orchids and Other Lilies, totaled $247 million. This compares to an aggregate of $231 million for 1995. The number of growers of potted flowering plants increased by 58 in 1996, to 2,704. The value of foliage plant production continued upward in 1996 with a 2 percent boost to $508 million. Florida continued to show strength in this segment as the value of sales in that state was up 6 percent from 1995. Potted foliage plants increased 5 percent in net value while value of hanging baskets fell 12 percent. In 1996 there were 1,612 foliage producers compared with 1,644 in 1995. Cut cultivated greens rebounded in 1996 with value reaching $121 million. Florida, at $97.0 million, accounted for 80 percent of this total. Value of Leatherleaf ferns rose 5 percent above last year. This was due to increases in both quantity sold and average price. Other cut cultivated greens rose 10 percent over 1995. The number of growers of cut cultivated greens increased by 5 in 1996 to 239. Survey Procedures and Definitions Survey Procedures The floriculture statistics presented in this publication are compiled from interviews of all known growers of floriculture crops in 36 selected states. Growers must have annual gross sales of all floriculture crops exceeding $10,000 to be included in this survey. Data collection began about January 1 and extended through February. A copy of the questionnaire used is included in the back of this report. The data in this report are comparable to data included in "Floriculture Crops" summaries from 1991 to the present. Beginning with the 1991 summary, details for individual crops on area in production, quantity sold, price, and value were collected only from growers whose gross sales exceeded $100,000. However, the summary tables for Growers and Growing Area, and Growers by Size of Reported Gross Sales include all growers with sales of $10,000 or more for these years. One point of variation occurs between the 1991 summary and later years. Eight states were added to the estimating program in 1992. Prior to 1992, 28 states were surveyed to collect floriculture information. Data for 1992 were computed to show 36 state totals and 28 state totals to enable some comparisons to be made between 1991 and 1992 data. Users of these data should consider the differences when comparing data from 1991-96 with data in earlier reports. Beginning with crop year 1996, a breakout for Orchids was added to the group of Potted Flowering Plants. Additionally, the breakout for Other Lilies was discontinued for Potted Flowering Plants. With the separation of Orchids and the inclusion of Other Lilies in the "All Other" category, the tables in earlier reports for Other Potted Flowering Plants will not be comparable. Survey Definitions Floriculture Crop: Any item considered in the category of bedding/garden plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, or foliage plants. Data for flowering potted plants and foliage plants represent only items intended for indoor or patio use. Refer to the copy of the questionnaire in the back of this report for specific examples. Commercial Grower: Any operation which produces any commodity listed above and whose gross sales total $10,000 or more during the calendar year. Area in Production (by crop): The gross area used, including walkways and aisles. All area used to grow a crop is counted, including area under glass, plastic, cloth, lath, and outdoors. The area used for each filling is included if more than one of the same crop is produced during the year. Area devoted to producing potted foliage and cut cultivated greens is counted only once even though some of the area may be refilled with additional plants. Growing Area (Total): Growing area, by type of cover, includes the gross square feet of physical space available to grow all floriculture crops produced by the operations surveyed. It is not limited to actual area used and does not include multiple uses of the same area. Quantity Sold: Sales represent both retail and wholesale quantities sold in the calendar year shown. Flowers, plants, or materials purchased from others for immediate resale are excluded from the totals in this report. For bedding plant flats, reported quantities are converted to the standard 11-inch x 22-inch flat size. Expanded Wholesale Value: Value of all crops grown, at wholesale, for growers above $10,000. This figure is calculated using two parts. One part uses survey totals of wholesale value of all sales as reported by growers with $100,000 or more of sales in floriculture crops. The second part is a calculated value for growers which fall between the $10,000 minimum and the $99,999 level. The value is derived by multiplying the number of growers in each range of sales by the dollar value of the midpoint of each range. The two components are then summed to provide state and 36 state totals. Value of Sales at Wholesale: The value of all crops, except potted foliage, on a gross wholesale basis before deductions for sales commissions, transportation charges, or other similar deductions. The value shown is an equivalent value of all sales at a wholesale price. It is derived by multiplying the average wholesale price by the total quantity sold. The value of sales for potted foliage plants is on a net sales basis. This value is determined by subtracting the reported cost of plant materials purchased from the value of all retail and wholesale sales. The data in this report for all bedding plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, and foliage are summarized only from growers with $100,000 or more in sales, during 1996. The data summarized in tables showing grower numbers, hired workers, and growing area represent all growers having sales of $10,000 or more. The table showing selected Hawaiian crops includes data for all operations with sales at, or above, the $10,000 level.
