United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Sp Cr 6-1 (98) Floriculture Crops 1997 Summary April 1998 Sp Cr 6-1 (4-98) Wholesale Value of Sales Up 5 Percent The value of floriculture crops continued to increase in 1997. The total value of all crops at wholesale for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $3.57 billion for 1997, compared with $3.41 billion in 1996. California continued as the leading state with crops valued at $746 million, up 11 percent for the year. Florida recorded a 3 percent decline in its output as the 1997 wholesale value of sales fell to $654 million. These two states accounted for 39 percent of the total value. Of the 36 states surveyed, 26 recorded higher value and 10 showed decreases. The top five states--California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and Ohio--accounted for $1.92 billion, 54 percent of the total value. Growers with sales exceeding $100,000 for the year accounted for 93 percent of the total, at $3.33 billion. This size group comprised 49 percent of the total number of growers. Covered area in floriculture crop production was down 3 percent in 1997 at slightly over 816 million square feet. Greenhouse space accounted for 57 percent of the total covered area with 466 million square feet, virtually unchanged from 1996. Film plastic structures increased 2 percent to 300 million square feet, but rigid plastic covers declined 5 percent to 97.4 million square feet. Glass greenhouse area fell 2 percent from the previous year to 69.0 million square feet. Shade and temporary cover constituted the remaining 350 million square feet of covered area, down 7 percent from 1996. Open ground usage increased to 30,181 acres, 4 percent over 1996's total. The number of growers continued to fall as the count in 1997 was 9,666, down 404 from the number in 1996. The number of growers with $100,000 or more in sales rose from 4,683 in 1996 to 4,722 in 1997. There was a slight shift into the $100,000 to $499,999 sales category as this group gained 61 operations while the $500,000 or more category lost 22 firms. All other size groups showed decreased grower counts. The largest drop occurred in the $50,000 to $99,999 size group, with 209 fewer growers recorded. The use of hired workers decreased in 1997. A total of 8,204 operations reported hired workers during the year, compared with 8,472 reporting hired workers a year earlier. Overall, 85 percent of the operations used some hired workers in 1997, compared with 84 percent in 1996. The average number of hired workers used during peak times, at 13.4, was marginally lower than the previous year's average of 13.5 workers. The largest growth in average number of workers occurred in the $500,000 plus size group where 43.2 workers were used compared to 42.7 workers in 1996. The total wholesale value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding the $100,000 sales level reached $3.33 billion in 1997, a 6 percent increase over the $3.15 billion for 1996. Values for all crop categories rose in 1997, except for cut cultivated greens. Bedding and garden plants, the largest contributor, recorded a 10 percent increase in wholesale value to $1.57 billion. Flowering potted plants recorded a 2 percent boost over the previous year reaching $701 million. Foliage also gained 2 percent in value at $522 million. Value of cut flowers grew 6 percent, but cut cultivated greens were down 11 percent. California had 22 percent of the total wholesale value for the 36 states surveyed. Florida was second with 19 percent. Michigan, Texas and Ohio rounded out the top five states. California, Michigan and Ohio posted increases over the previous year, but Florida and Texas fell below last year's totals. Growers posted a large increase in bedding and garden plant production for 1997. The number of growers producing bedding and garden plants was 3,355 in 1997, up 76 from the number in 1996. The wholesale value of bedding and garden plants totaled $1.57 billion, 10 percent above 1996. This represented 47 percent of the wholesale value of all the reported crops. California, Michigan, Florida, Texas, and Ohio accounted for 42 percent of the total bedding and garden value. Of the specified bedding plants in the survey, potted Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) returned the highest wholesale value to growers, $136 million compared with $131 million the year before. Impatiens flats provided the second largest amount, $119 million. The value of bedding and garden flats reached $840 million, 15 percent higher than the previous year. Flats represented 54 percent of the total value for bedding and garden plants. Petunia flats showed a healthy 18 percent gain, Impatiens (I. wallerana) were up 9 percent, and New Guinea Impatiens were slightly higher. Lower sales pushed Geranium flats down 18 percent. Other unspecified flowering and foliar flats, which account for 60 percent of the total flats, showed a 22 percent gain. Vegetable flats increased 3 percent in value above last year. Potted bedding and garden plants tallied $543 million, representing 35 percent of the total. This was up 4 percent from 1996. Potted New Guinea Impatiens led the increases with a 17 percent gain over 1996. Geraniums (from cuttings and seed), Hardy Garden Mums, and Other Flowering and Foliar plants also registered increases. Wholesale values of potted Petunias and Impatiens slipped from the previous year. Flowering hanging baskets accounted for $186 million, 12 percent of the bedding and garden total. All hanging basket sales were higher in 1997, with Petunias up the most at 15 percent. Prices were lower for Geraniums, Impatiens, New Guinea Impatiens, and Other Flowering Hanging Baskets. Petunias showed the only price increase. Strong sales for all categories overcame the weaker prices. The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers grew by 6 percent in 1997. The total value for all cut flowers amounted to $437 million. California's value reached $283 million, 65 percent of the total for cut flowers. Only Gladioli and Pompon Chrysanthemums showed increases in value, each up 2 percent. Acreage devoted to their production also increased, up 3 and 16 percent, respectively. Sharp drops were seen in Standard Chrysanthemums, down 31 percent in value, and Standard Carnations, off 28 percent; the respective sales of the two decreased 20 and 33 percent. Prices of cut flowers were mixed, ranging from a 13 percent increase for Miniature Carnations to a 14 percent drop for Standard Chrysanthemums. Value of all other unspecified cut flowers was up 14 percent in 1997, with a 10 percent increase in the area of production. There were 3 fewer growers of cut flowers in 1997, as the number dropped to 760. Potted flowering plants value totaled $701 million, 2 percent above the $684 million posted in 1996. The largest single contributor, Poinsettias, recorded a 3 percent increase over the previous year. Higher values were received for Potted Orchids, up 37 percent, and Florist Azaleas, up 10 percent. Cyclamens and Kalanchoes also saw increases, up 7 and 2 percent, respectively. Easter Lilies and Florist Chrysanthemums dropped in value, but African Violets were unchanged. Value for Other Potted Flowering Plants totaled $191 million. The number of growers of potted flowering plants decreased by 47 in 1997, to 2,663. The value of foliage plant production continued upward in 1997, with a 2 percent boost to $522 million. Florida continued to show strength in this segment. Potted foliage plants increased 3 percent in net value, but value of hanging baskets fell 1 percent. In 1997, there were 1,652 foliage producers, compared with 1,621 in 1996. Cut cultivated greens fell in value 11 percent to $105 million. Florida, at $86.0 million, accounted for 81 percent of this total. Value of Leatherleaf ferns, at $60.4 million, was off 11 percent from last year. This was due to drops in both quantity sold and average price. Other cut cultivated greens also declined 11 percent from the previous year. The number of growers of cut cultivated greens decreased by 7 in 1997 to 227. Survey Procedures and Definitions Survey Procedures The floriculture statistics presented in this publication are compiled from interviews of all known growers of floriculture crops in the 36 selected states. Growers must have annual gross sales of all floriculture crops exceeding $10,000 to be included in this survey. Data collection began about January 1 and extended through February. A copy of the questionnaire used is included at the end of this report. The data in this report are comparable to data included in "Floriculture Crops" summaries from 1991 to the present. Beginning with the 1991 summary, details for individual crops on area in production, quantity sold, price, and value were collected only from growers whose gross sales exceeded $100,000. However, the summary tables for Growers and Growing Area, and Growers by Size of Reported Gross Sales include all growers with sales of $10,000 or more for these years. One point of variation occurs between the 1991 summary and later years. Eight states were added to the estimating program in 1992. Prior to 1992, 28 states were surveyed to collect floriculture information. Data for 1992 were computed to show 36 state totals and 28 state totals to enable some comparisons to be made between 1991 and 1992 data. Users of these data should consider the differences when comparing data from 1991-96 with data in earlier reports. Beginning with crop year 1996, a breakout for Orchids was added to the group of Potted Flowering Plants. Additionally, the breakout for Other Lilies was discontinued for Potted Flowering Plants. With the separation of Orchids and the inclusion of Other Lilies in the "All Other" category, the tables in earlier reports for Other Potted Flowering Plants will not be comparable. Survey Definitions Floriculture Crop: Any item considered in the category of bedding/garden plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, or foliage plants. Data for flowering potted plants and foliage plants represent only items intended for indoor or patio use. Refer to the copy of the questionnaire at the end of this report for specific examples. Commercial Grower: Any operation which produces any commodity listed above and whose gross sales total $10,000 or more during the calendar year. Area in Production (by crop): The gross area used, including walkways and aisles. All area used to grow a crop is counted, including area under glass, plastic, cloth, lath, and outdoors. The area used for each filling is included if more than one of the same crop is produced during the year. Area devoted to producing potted foliage and cut cultivated greens is counted only once even though some of the area may be refilled with additional plants. Growing Area (Total): Growing area, by type of cover, includes the gross square feet of physical space available to grow all floriculture crops produced by the operations surveyed. It is not limited to actual area used and does not include multiple uses of the same area. Quantity Sold: Sales represent both retail and wholesale quantities sold in the calendar year shown. Flowers, plants, or materials purchased from others for immediate resale are excluded from the totals in this report. For bedding plant flats, reported quantities are converted to the standard 11-inch x 22-inch flat size. Expanded Wholesale Value: Value of all crops grown, at wholesale, for growers above $10,000. This figure is calculated using two parts. One part uses survey totals of wholesale value of all sales as reported by growers with $100,000 or more of sales in floriculture crops. The second part is a calculated value for operations which fall between the $10,000 minimum and the $99,999 level. The value is derived by multiplying the number of growers in each range of sales by the dollar value of the midpoint of each range. The two components are then summed to provide state and 36-state totals. Value of Sales at Wholesale: The value of all crops, except potted foliage, on a gross wholesale basis before deductions for sales commissions, transportation charges, or other similar deductions. The value shown is an equivalent value of all sales at a wholesale price. It is derived by multiplying the average wholesale price by the total quantity sold. The value of sales for potted foliage plants is on a net sales basis. This value is determined by subtracting the reported cost of plant materials purchased from the value of all retail and wholesale sales. The data in this report for all bedding plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, and foliage are summarized only from growers with $100,000 or more in annual sales. The data summarized in tables showing grower numbers, hired workers, and growing area represent all growers having sales of $10,000 or more. The table showing selected Hawaiian crops includes data for all operations with sales at, or above, the $10,000 level.
