United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Sp Cr 6-1 (00) Floriculture Crops 1999 Summary April 2000 Wholesale Value of Floriculture Crops Up Four Percent The results in this report are based upon two survey instruments. The 1998 data are from the decennial Census of Horticultural Specialties which contained the traditional questions about floriculture production plus questions about horticultural commodities in general. The 1999 information is from the annual Commercial Floriculture questionnaire which specifically targets floriculture producers. Please see Survey Procedures on page 96 for a detailed explanation. The 1999 wholesale value of floriculture crops was up 4 percent from the revised 1998 valuation. The total crop value at wholesale for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $4.10 billion for 1999, compared with $3.95 billion for 1998. California was again the leading state with crops valued at $796 million, up 1 percent for the year. Florida was up 7 percent from 1998 with $671 million in wholesale value. These two states accounted for 36 percent of the total value. Of the 36 states surveyed, 27 showed increased value over the previous year. The top five states--California, Florida, Texas, Michigan, and Ohio--accounted for $2.10 billion, 51 percent of the total value. Growers with annual sales exceeding $100,000 accounted for 92 percent of the total, at $3.77 billion. This group comprised 42 percent of all growers. The number of growers tallied to 11,480 in 1999, compared with 1998's revised count of 12,259. The number of growers with sales of $100,000 or more dropped from 5,199 to 4,797 for 1999. The two smaller size groups--$10,000 to 19,999 and $20,000 to 39,999 and the $100,000 to 499,999 group showed decreases; all other sales groupings were up from 1998. Total covered area for floriculture crop production was recorded at 925 million square feet, down 2 percent. Total greenhouse space accounted for 58 percent of the total covered area with 533 million square feet, down 4 percent from 1998. Film plastic structures decreased 4 percent to 371 million square feet. Fiberglass and other rigid plastic covers were down 4 percent for the year while glass greenhouse area was off 8 percent. Shade and temporary cover constituted the remaining 392 million square feet of covered area, up 1 percent from 1998. Open ground usage totaled 35,394 acres, 8 percent under 1998's total. The use of hired labor in 1999 was down for all sales ranges. A total of 9,392 operations reported hired workers during the year, compared with 10,570 a year earlier. Overall, 82 percent of the operations used some hired labor, compared with 86 percent in 1998. The average number of hired workers used during peak times, at 13.7 was down slightly from 1998's revised 13.8. The total wholesale value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding the $100,000 sales level reached $3.77 billion in 1999, up 4 percent from 1998's total. Values for all crop categories were up from1998. Bedding and garden plants, the largest contributor, recorded a 4 percent increase in wholesale value to $1.95 billion. Potted flowering plants were up 4 percent in value to $765 million. Foliage gained 1 percent in value at $509 million. Value of cut flowers gained 3 percent to $426 million while cut cultivated greens rose 8 percent to $127 million. California had 21 percent of the total wholesale value for the 36 states surveyed. Florida was second with 17 percent . Texas, Michigan, and Ohio rounded out the top five states. All the top five posted gains over the previous year, except Ohio which was down slightly from 1998's levels. Growers posted another large increase in bedding and garden plant production during 1999. The wholesale value of bedding and garden plants totaled $1.95 billion, 4 percent above the year earlier. This represented 52 percent of the wholesale value of all the reported crops. California, Michigan, Texas, Ohio, and Florida accounted for 41 percent of the total bedding and garden value. Of the specified bedding plants in the survey, potted Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) returned the highest value to growers, $148 million, virtually unchanged from the year before. Impatiens flats provided the second largest amount of $115 million. The number of growers producing bedding and garden plants was 3,443, down 328 from 1998. Potted bedding and garden plants tallied $824 million, representing 42 percent of the category total. This category showed a 4 percent decrease for the year. Hardy Garden Mums, Impatiens (I. wallerana and New Guinea), and Petunias recorded increases. Geraniums (from cuttings and seed) were off slightly while other unspecified Flowering and Foliar plants had a 10 percent loss from last year. The value of bedding and garden flats rose 12 percent from the year earlier to $901 million. Flats represented 46 percent of the total value for bedding and garden plants. Average annual prices for Geraniums, Impatiens, Petunia, and vegetable flats were up while New Guinea Impatiens brought a lower price. Other unspecified flowering and foliar flats, which account for 62 percent of this category, showed a 17 percent increase in value. Flowering hanging baskets accounted for $221 million, 11 percent of the bedding and garden total. All hanging basket prices were up for the year, helping the hanging basket value gain 7 percent over 1998. The value of foliage plant production continued upward in 1999, recording a 1 percent gain to $509 million. Florida continued to dominate this category with 61 percent of the value. Hanging baskets were up 22 percent but potted foliage plants lost 2 percent in net value. In 1999, there were 1,543 foliage producers compared with 1,536 in 1998. The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers gained 3 percent in 1999, totaling $426 million. California's portion reached $280 million, 66 percent of the total cut flower value in the 36 surveyed states. Values for all the surveyed cut flowers were down sharply from the previous year. Only the Other unspecified cut flowers recorded an increase in value which was large enough to give the overall category an increase. The number of cut flower growers dropped by 31 to 659 during 1999. Potted flowering plants value totaled $765 million, up 4 percent for the year. California accounted for 20 percent of the category's total value. Poinsettias, which make up $228 million of the category, were up 2 percent in total value from 1998. Four of the remaining listed plants recorded value increases for the year Orchids, up 22 percent; Florist Azaleas, up 11 percent; African Violets, up 9 percent; and Cyclamen, up 9 percent. Florist Mums, Easter Lilies, and Kalanchoe showed lower values for the year. Other unspecified potted flowering plants showed a 2 percent gain. Cut cultivated greens gained 8 percent in value to $127 million in 1999. Florida, at $101 million, accounted for 80 percent of the category total. Value of Leatherleaf ferns, at $65 million, was up 7 percent from last year. Other cut cultivated greens increased 9 percent over the year earlier. The number of growers dropped by 41 to 241 for 1999. Survey Procedures The floriculture statistics presented in this publication are compiled from interviews of all known growers of floriculture crops in the 36 selected states. Growers must have annual gross sales of all floriculture crops exceeding $10,000 to be included in this report. The 1998 results in this report were based upon the decennial Census of Horticultural Specialties. The survey questionnaire contained the traditional questions about floriculture production plus detailed questions about horticultural commodities in general. The 1999 results are based upon the Commercial Floriculture questionnaire, a copy of which is included in this report. During the collection of 1999 data, previous year information was sometimes updated. It was found that non-floriculture data had been included in the previous year's report especially in those items asked of all operators with $10,000 - $99,999 of sales. Where possible, this was corrected to reflect the floriculture portion of the industry. The main items affected were labor, growing area, and operation counts. Procedures to classify operations by value of sales reflect the summation of actual sales. Prior to 1998 results, the classification was made by the respondent indicating a sales range and may have included total sales rather than floriculture sales. Individual crop details including quantity sold, price, and value were summarized only from growers whose gross sales of floriculture crops exceed $100,000. In addition, area of production is collected for cut flowers, cut cultivated greens, and potted foliage. Survey Definitions Floriculture Crop: Any item considered in the category of bedding/garden plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, or foliage plants. Data for flowering potted plants and foliage plants represent only items intended for indoor or patio use. Refer to the copy of the questionnaire at the end of this report for specific examples. Commercial Grower: Any operation which produces any commodity listed above and whose gross sales total $10,000 or more during the calendar year. Area in Production (by crop): The gross area used, including walkways and aisles. All area used to grow a crop is counted, including area under glass, plastic, cloth, lath, and outdoors. The area used for each filling is included if more than one of the same crop is produced during the year. Area devoted to producing potted foliage and cut cultivated greens is counted only once even though some of the area may be refilled with additional plants. Growing Area (Total): Growing area, by type of cover, includes the gross square feet of physical space available to grow all floriculture crops produced by the operations surveyed. It is not limited to actual area used and does not include multiple uses of the same area. Quantity Sold: Sales represent both retail and wholesale quantities sold in the calendar year shown. Flowers, plants, or materials purchased from others for immediate resale are excluded from the totals in this report. For bedding plant flats, reported quantities are converted to the standard 11-inch x 22-inch flat size. Expanded Wholesale Value: Value of all crops grown, at wholesale, for growers above $10,000. This figure is calculated using two parts. One part uses survey totals of wholesale value of all sales as reported by growers with $100,000 or more of floriculture crop sales. The second part is a calculated value for operations which fall between the $10,000 minimum and the $99,999 level. The value is derived by multiplying the number of growers in each range of sales by the midpoint dollar value of each range. The two components are then summed to provide state and 36-state totals. Value of Sales at Wholesale: The value of all crops, except potted foliage, on a gross wholesale basis before deductions for sales commissions, transportation charges, or other similar deductions. The value shown is an equivalent value of all sales at a wholesale price. It is derived by multiplying the average wholesale price by the total quantity sold. The value of sales for potted foliage plants is on a net sales basis. This value is determined by subtracting the reported cost of plant materials purchased from the value of all retail and wholesale sales. The data in this report for all bedding plants, cut cultivated greens, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, and foliage are summarized only from growers with $100,000 or more in annual sales. The data summarized in tables showing grower numbers, hired workers, and growing area represent all growers having sales of $10,000 or more. The table showing selected Hawaiian crops includes data for all operations with sales at, or above, the $10,000 level.
