This record level continues the trend of annual increases begun in 1975. Leading breeders had intended placements of 73.9 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1995, an increase of 1 percent from 1994. 15-State Broiler Placements Placements of broiler chicks in the 15-State weekly program totaled 6.84 billion during the 52 week period ending December 30, 1995. This total was 4 percent larger than the comparable period a year earlier. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Up 4 Percent Egg-type chicks hatched during 1995 totaled 396 million, up 4 percent from 1994. Leading breeders had intended placements of 2.94 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1995, a decrease of 3 percent from 1994. Poults Placed Turkey hatcheries placed 321 million poults in the United States during 1995. This output was up 1 percent from 1994. Hatchery Capacity The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 1996, was 793 million eggs, up 7 percent from a year earlier. The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 49.7 million on January 1, 1996, down slightly from January 1,1995.
