Pou 1-1-1 (97) Hatchery Production 1996 Summary Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched Up 2 Percent Broiler-type chicks hatched during 1996 totaled 8.08 billion, an increase of 2 percent from 1995. This record level continues the trend of annual increases begun in 1975. Leading breeders had intended placements of 74.6 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1996, an increase of 1 percent from 1995. 15-State Broiler Placements Placements of broiler chicks in the 15-State weekly program totaled 6.92 billion during the 52 week period ending December 28, 1996. This total was 1 percent larger than the comparable period a year earlier. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Up 4 Percent Egg-type chicks hatched during 1996 totaled 407 million, up 3 percent from 1995. Leading breeders had intended placements of 2.94 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1996, virtually the same as 1995. Poults Placed Turkey hatcheries placed 327 million poults in the United States during 1996. This output was up 2 percent from 1995. Hatchery Capacity The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 1997, was 825 million eggs, up 4 percent from a year earlier. The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 50.3 million on January 1, 1997, up 1 percent from January 1, 1996.
