United States Department of Agriculture Hatchery Production 1997 Summary April 1998 National Agricultural Statistics Service Pou 1-1-1 (98) Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched Up 3 Percent Broiler-type chicks hatched during 1997 totaled 8.32 billion, an increase of 3 percent from 1996. This record level continues the trend of annual increases begun in 1975. Leading breeders had intended placements of 77.1 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1997, an increase of 3 percent from 1996. 15-State Broiler Placements Placements of broiler chicks in the 15-State weekly program totaled 7.16 billion during the 52 week period ending December 27, 1997. This total was 3 percent larger than the comparable period a year earlier. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Up 6 Percent Egg-type chicks hatched during 1997 totaled 425 million, up 6 percent from 1996. Leading breeders had intended placements of 2.98 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1997, up 1 percent from 1996. Poults Placed Turkey hatcheries placed 321 million poults in the United States during 1997. This output was down 2 percent from 1996. Hatchery Capacity The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 1998, was 833 million eggs, up 2 percent from a year earlier. The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 51.5 million on January 1, 1998, down 1 percent from January 1,1997.
