United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Pou 1-1-1 (00) Hatchery Production 1999 Summary April 2000 Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched Up 3 Percent Broiler-type chicks hatched during 1999 totaled 8.72 billion, an increase of 3 percent from 1998. This record level continues the trend of annual increases begun in 1975. Leading breeders had intended placements of 85.8 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1999, an increase of 3 percent from 1998. 15-State Broiler Placements Placements of broiler chicks in the 15-State weekly program totaled 7.41 billion during the 52 week period ending January 1, 2000. This total was 2 percent larger than the comparable period a year earlier. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Up 3 Percent Egg-type chicks hatched during 1999 totaled 451 millon, up 3 percent from 1998. Leading breeders had intended placements of 2.94 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 1999, down 6 percent from 1998. Poults Placed Turkey hatcheries placed 297 million poults in the United States during 1999. This output was down slightly from 1998. Hatchery Capacity The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 2000, was 858 million eggs, up slightly from a year earlier. The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 47.9 million on January 1, 2000, up 1 percent from January 1, 1999.
