United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Pou 1-1-1 (03) Hatchery Production 2002 Summary April 2003 Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched Up 1 Percent Broiler-type chicks hatched during 2002 totaled 9.08 billion, up 1 percent from 2001. This record level continues the trend of annual increases begun in 1975. Leading breeders had intended placements of 82.3 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2002, an increase of 1 percent from 2001. 19-State Broiler Placements Placements of broiler chicks in the 19-State weekly program totaled 8.66 billion during the 52 week period ending December 28, 2002. Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Down 7 Percent Egg-type chicks hatched during 2002 totaled 421 million, down 7 percent from 2001. Leading breeders had intended placements of 2.93 million egg-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2002, down 4 percent from 2001. Poults Placed Turkey hatcheries placed 297 million poults in the United States during 2002. These placements were down 1 percent from 2001. Hatchery Capacity The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 2003 was 861 million eggs, down 2 percent from a year earlier. The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 45.5 million eggs on January 1, 2003, down slightly from January 1, 2002. The 15 State total in the Weekly Broiler Program was discontinued on May 15, 2002.
