HDR1012000130020331951500Hogs and Pigs HDR2012000130020331951500Hogs and Pigs Narrative Released March 31, 1995, by the Agricultural Statistics Board. Estimates refer to March 1, 1995, and December 1994-February 1995. U.S. Hog Inventory Up 2 Percent U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 1995, was a record high 58.4 million head. This was 2 percent above March 1994 but 3 percent below the December 1, 1994, inventory. The previous record high March inventory was in 1994. Breeding inventory, at 6.99 million head, was down 3 percent from March 1, 1994, and down 1 percent from the previous quarter. Market hog inventory, at 51.4 million head, was 3 percent above March 1, 1994, but 3 percent below December 1, 1994. The December 1994-February 1995 U.S. pig crop was a record high 23.7 million head, 2 percent more than 1994 and up 4 percent from the same period in 1993. Sows farrowing during this period totaled 2.87 million head, down slightly from ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For information call Thomas Kurtz at (202) 720-3106. Pigs saved per litter were a record high 8.27 compared to 8.10 during the same period a year ago. Pigs saved per litter by size of operation ranged from 7.00 for operations with 1-99 hogs to 8.70 for operations with 2,000 or more hogs and pigs. U.S. producers intend to have 3.21 million sows farrow during the March-May 1995 quarter, 5 percent less than the actual farrowings during the same period last year and down slightly from 1993. Intended farrowings for June-August 1995, at 3.02 million sows, are down 3 percent from 1994 but up 2 percent from the 1993 period. Revisions All inventory and pig crop estimates for 1994 were reviewed using slaughter and balance sheets. Based on this review, the December 1, 1994, inventory was raised 380 thousand head (.6 percent). The September-November 1994 pig crop was raised 283 thousand head (1.2 percent). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This report was approved on March 31, 1995, by the Secretary of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Statistics Service's Agricultural Statistics Board. HDR2012000130020331951500Reliability Reliability of March 1 Hogs and Pigs Estimates Survey Procedures: A random sample of 78,000 U.S. producers was surveyed to provide data for these estimates. Survey procedures ensured that all hog and pig producers, regardless of size, had a chance to be included in the survey. Large producers were sampled more heavily than small operations. Data were collected from about 66,500 operations, 85 percent of the total sample, during the first-half of March by mail, telephone, and face-to-face personal interviews. Regardless of when operations responded, they were asked to report inventories as of March 1. Estimation Procedures: These hogs and pigs estimates were prepared by the Agricultural Statistics Board after reviewing recommendations and analysis submitted by each State office. National and State survey data were reviewed for reasonableness with each other and with estimates from past years using a balance sheet. The balance sheet begins with the previous inventory estimate, adds to it estimates of births and imports, and subtracts estimates of slaughter, exports, and deaths. This indicated ending inventory level is compared to the Agricultural Statistics Board estimate for reasonableness. Revision Policy: Revisions to previous estimates are made to improve quarter to quarter relationships. Estimates for the previous four quarters are subject to revision when current estimates are made. In December, estimates for all quarters of the current and previous year are reviewed. The reviews are primarily based on hog check-off receipts and slaughter. Estimates are also reviewed after data from the Department of Commerce's five-year Census of Agriculture are available. No revisions are made after that date. This fall, after the 1992 Census of Agriculture was available, the 1988-1992 estimates were reviewed and final revisions were made. Revised 1988-1992 estimates are published in Statistical Bulletin Number 904. Reliability: Since all operations raising hogs are not included in the sample, survey estimates are subject to sampling variability. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. The effects of these errors cannot be measured directly. They are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and through a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. To assist users in evaluating the reliability of the estimates in this report, the "Root Mean Square Error" is shown for selected items in the table on page 21. The "Root Mean Square Error" is a statistical measure based on past performance and is computed using the difference between first and final estimates. The "Root Mean Square Error" for hog inventory estimates over the past 20 quarters is 1.5 percent. This means that chances are 2 out of 3 that the final estimate will not be above or below the current estimate of 58.4 mil- lion head by more than 1.5 percent, or about 875,000 head. Chances are 9 out of 10 that the difference will not exceed 2.6 percent, or about 1,520,000 head (the 90 percent confidence level).
