HDR1012000130060413951500Meat Animals - Prod., Disp., & Income HDR2012000130060413951500Meat Animals - Prod., Disp., & Income Narr. 1994 Gross Income From Meat Animals Down 8 Percent The 1994 gross income from cattle and calves, hogs and pigs, and sheep and lambs for the U.S. totaled $47.2 billion, down 8 percent from 1993. Gross income declined for all three species. Hogs and pigs, at 10 percent below 1993, posted the largest decline. Gross income from cattle and sheep fell 7 percent each. Total 1994 cash receipts from marketings of meat animals fell 8 percent to $46.8 billion. Cattle and calves accounted for 78 percent of this total, hogs and pigs 21 percent, and sheep and lambs 1 percent. For both cattle and hogs, production increases were more than offset by a drop in average prices. For sheep, lower production reduced cash receipts in spite of higher prices. Cattle and Calves: Cash receipts from marketings of cattle and calves decreased from $39.4 billion in 1993 to $36.4 in 1994, a 7 percent decline. All cattle and calf marketings totaled 54.2 billion pounds in 1994, up 2 percent from the 53.0 billion pounds in 1993. The U.S. annual average price per 100 pounds liveweight for cattle was $66.70, a decline of $5.90 from the $72.60 in 1993. For calves, the annual average price fell $4.00 to $87.20. Hogs and Pigs: Cash receipts from hogs and pigs totaled $9.86 billion during 1994, down 10 percent from 1993. Marketings increased to 24.5 billion pounds in 1994, 2 percent above the previous year. However, the U.S. annual average price per 100 pounds liveweight dropped from $45.20 in 1993 to $39.90 in 1994. Sheep and Lambs: Cash receipts from marketings of sheep and lambs in 1994 were $506 million, down 7 percent from 1993. Marketings declined 10 percent to 883 million pounds. The U.S. annual average price per 100 pounds liveweight for lambs increased from $64.40 in 1993 to $65.60 in 1994. For sheep, the annual average price increased $2.30 to $30.90. HDR2012000130060413951500Reliability Reliability of Production, Disposition, and Income Estimates Survey Procedures: These estimates were based on inventory, birth, and price estimates as published in NASS cattle, hog, sheep, and agricultural prices reports, as well as information on inshipments and marketings obtained from other sources. The NASS inventory reports are based on probability surveys of producers. All producers, regardless of size, had a chance to be in the survey. Large operations were sampled more heavily than small operations. Since all operations raising cattle, hogs, or sheep are not included in the sample, survey estimates are subject to sampling variability. At the National level, this variability, as measured by the relative standard error, is about 1 percent for cattle, 1.5 percent for sheep, and 2 percent for hogs. Survey results are also subject to non-sampling errors such as omissions, duplication, and mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. The effects of these errors can not be measured directly, but they are minimized through rigid quality controls in the data collection process and a careful review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness. Readers are referred to the Survey Procedures section in the following NASS reports for further information -"Hogs and Pigs" released December 29, 1994, "Sheep and Goats" released January 27, 1995, "Cattle" released February 3, 1995, and "Agricultural Prices" released February 28, 1995. Estimation Procedures: Estimation procedures for prices, beginning and ending inventories and calf, pig, and lamb crop estimates are defined in the Estimation Procedures section of the reports referenced above. This report provides a balance sheet for each species. The sum of inventory on hand at the beginning of the year plus births and inshipments equals the sum of marketings, farm slaughter, deaths, and inventory on hand at the end of the year. Revision Policy: Revisions to previous estimates are made to improve current estimates. For all species, previous year estimates of inshipments, marketings, farm slaughter, and deaths are subject to revision when the current year estimates are made. Estimates are also reviewed after data from the Department of Commerce's five-year Census of Agriculture are available. No revisions are made after that date. This year, after the 1992 Census of Agriculture was available, 1988-92 estimates were reviewed and final revisions were made. Revised 1988-92 estimates are published in Statistical Bulletin Number 907, released March 30, 1995. Revisions policies for all prices, inventory and calf, pig, and lamb crop estimates are outlined in the reports mentioned above. Terms and Definitions Cash Receipts: Receipts from marketings and any sale of farm-slaughtered meats. For hogs and pigs, includes an allowance for feeder pig outshipments. U.S. prices received for cattle and calves, hogs and pigs, and sheep and lambs were published in "Agricultural Prices", released February 28, 1995. Farm Slaughter: Animals slaughtered on farms primarily for home consumption. Excludes custom slaughter for producers at commercial establishments. Gross Income: Sum of cash receipts and value of home consumption. Inshipments: Livestock shipped into States for feeding or breeding. Excludes animals brought in for immediate slaughter. Marketings: Includes animals for slaughter market and younger animals shipped to other States for feeding and breeding purposes. Excludes interfarm sales within the same State and farm slaughter. Number of head marketed includes all custom slaughter, but liveweight marketed, shown in pounds, excludes custom slaughter consumed on farms where produced. Production: Includes total liveweight of animals marketed, farm slaughter, and custom slaughter consumed on farms where produced, minus liveweight of inshipments, with an adjustment for any increase or decrease in liveweight of inventory. Value of Home Consumption: Total value of on-farm slaughter and custom slaughter consumed on the farm where produced.
