United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Da 1-2 (98) Milk Production, Disposition and Income 1997 Summary May 1998 Da 1-2 (5-98) Milk Production, Disposition, and Income 1997 Milk production increased 2 percent in 1997 to 157 billion pounds. The rate per cow at 16,915 pounds, was 436 pounds above 1996. The annual average number of cows on farms at 9.26 million head, was 103,000 less than 1996. Cash receipts from marketings of milk during 1997 at $21.0 billion dollars, was 8 percent below 1996. Producer returns averaged $13.53 per hundredweight, $1.41 per hundredweight below 1996. Marketings totaled 155 billion pounds, 2 percent above 1996. Marketings include whole milk sold to plants and dealers as well as milk sold directly to consumers. An estimated 1.43 billion pounds of milk were used on farms where produced, 4 percent less than 1996. Calves were fed 82 percent of this milk with the remainder consumed in producer households.
