All Mushroom Sales Down 2 Percent, Value Down 1 Percent Sales of the 2000-01 U.S. mushroom crop were 853 million pounds, 2 percent below 1999-2000 and down 1 percent from two seasons ago. Value of sales of the U.S. mushroom crop was $863 million, down 1 percent from 1999-2000 and slightly below two seasons ago. The number of growers, at 264, is down 40 from last season. Average price was $1.01 per pound, up 1 cent from the previous season. Sales of Agaricus mushrooms for fresh market were a record high 687 million pounds, up 3 percent from the previous record high set last season. Sales of Agaricus mushrooms for processing were 152 million pounds, 18 percent below last season and the lowest since 1970-71 when 149 million pounds were processed. Value of sales of specialty mushrooms, at $42.7 million, was up 10 percent from last season. Agaricus Mushrooms Agaricus mushroom sales totaled 839 million pounds, 2 percent below the1999-2000 season and down 1 percent from 1998-99. Pennsylvania accounted for 53 percent of the total volume of sales and second ranked California contributed 15 percent. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $820 million, down 1 percent from the 1999-2000 season. Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 96.3 million pounds, 11 percent of total Agaricus volume sold. The value of sales of the Brown mushroom crop for the 2000-01 season was $114 million, 14 percent of total Agaricus sales. The number of Agaricus growers in the U.S. totaled 136, down 11 from last season and 15 below two seasons ago. Growers with sales exceeding 10 million pounds accounted for 63 percent of U.S. Agaricus production, or 526 million pounds. The volume of sales groups are as follows: over 20.0 million pounds, 11 growers; 10.0 million and 19.9 million pounds, 14 growers; 5.0 million to 9.9 million pounds, 23 growers; 2.5 million to 4.9 million pounds, 28 growers; 1.0 million to 2.4 million pounds, 29 growers; 0.5 million to 1.0 million pounds, 8 growers; less than 0.5 million pounds of sales, 23 growers. The growing area was 32.7 million square feet, down 11 percent from the previous season and 8 percent below 1998-99. Yields averaged 5.83 pounds per square foot, up 3 percent from 1999-2000. Producers received a record high average return of $5.71 per square foot, up 24 cents from last season and 19 cents above the previous record of $5.52 per square foot set during the 1998-99 season. U.S. fresh market production was 82 percent of total sales volume with processed making up the remaining 18 percent. U.S. fresh market production was 4 percentage points above last season. For the 2001-02 crop, growers plan to increase their total fillings by 3 percent from the 2000-01 crop. Specialty Mushrooms - Shiitake, Oyster, and all Other Exotics Value of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 2000-01 was $42.7 million, up 10 percent from the 1999-2000 season. A specialty grower is defined as having at least 200 natural wood logs in production or some commercial indoor growing area. The average price per pound received by growers, at $2.90, is down 15 cents from the previous season. Sales of Shiitake mushrooms totaled 9.33 million pounds for the 2000-01 season, up 14 percent from the previous season. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.98, is down 31 cents from 1999-2000. Sales volume of Oyster mushrooms, at 3.44 million pounds, is up 3 percent from the previous season. Sales of exotic mushrooms, other than Shiitake or Oyster, were 1.98 million pounds, up 63 percent from last season. Certified Organic Agaricus and Specialty Mushrooms Sales of certified organic Agaricus and specialty mushrooms totaled 8.51 million pounds for the 2000-01 growing season, 27 percent below last season's production. These certified organic sales represent 1 percent of the total mushroom sales. The number of certified organic mushroom growers totaled 29, eleven percent of all 264 mushroom producers.
