All Mushroom Sales Down 3 Percent, Value Down 4 Percent Sales of the 2009-2010 United States mushroom crop are 793 million pounds, down 3 percent from the 2008-2009 season. Value of sales for the 2009-2010 United States mushroom crop is $925 million, down 4 percent from the previous season. The number of growers, at 312, is up 23 from last season. The average price is $1.17 per pound, unchanged from 2008-2009. Volume of sales reported by growers of Agaricus mushrooms for fresh market is 671 million pounds, down 1 percent from the 2008-2009 season. Volume of sales of Agaricus mushrooms for processing is 107 million pounds, down 13 percent from last season. Value of sales for all Agaricus mushrooms totaled $886 million, down 3 percent from the previous year. Agaricus Mushrooms Agaricus mushroom volume of sales totaled 778 million pounds, down 3 percent from the 2008-2009. Pennsylvania accounted for 64 percent of the total volume of sales and second-ranked California contributed 14 percent. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $886 million dollars, down 3 percent from the 2008-2009 season. Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 120 million pounds, up 8 percent from last season. Brown mushrooms accounted for 15 percent of the total Agaricus volume sold. The brown mushroom crop value of sales for the 2009-2010 season is $168 million dollars, 19 percent of the total Agaricus value. The total number of Agaricus growers in the U.S., at 112, is five less growers than last season. Growers with sales exceeding 10 million pounds accounted for 69 percent of U.S. Agaricus production, or 540 million pounds. The number of growers by sales categories is as follows: Over 20.0 million pounds, 8 growers; 10.0 million to 19.9 million pounds, 17 growers; 5.0 million to 9.9 million pounds, 16 growers; 2.5 million to 4.9 million pounds, 21 growers; 1.0 million to 2.4 million pounds, 29 growers; 0.5 million to 1.0 million pounds, 2 growers; less than 0.5 million pounds of sales, 19 growers. The growing area is 27.6 million square feet, virtually unchanged from the previous season. Total fillings are 131 million square feet, down 3 percent from last season. Yields averaged 5.96 pounds per square foot, down slightly from last season. Producers received an average return of $6.78 per square foot, up 1 cent from last season. U.S. fresh market production of Agaricus mushrooms is at 671 million pounds, down 1 percent from the previous season, while processed production, at 107 million pounds, is 13 percent below the previous season. Growers reported U.S. fresh market production at 86 percent of total sales volume with processed production making up the remaining 14 percent. Grower total filling intentions for the 2010-2011 crop are 127 million square feet, 2 percent less than the total fillings in the 2009-2010 season. The 62 growers of Agaricus mushrooms in Chester County, Pennsylvania produced 351 million pounds, of Agaricus mushrooms, down 3 percent from the 2008-2009 growing season. This production was valued at $308 million, down 1 percent from the 2008-2009 growing season. The growing area in Chester County was 11.5 million square feet, down 2 percent from the 2008-2009 growing season. Total fillings were 53.5 million square feet, down 4 percent from the 2008-2009 growing season. Specialty Mushrooms - Shiitake, Oyster, and all Other Exotics Value of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 2009-2010 is $39.1 million, down 19 percent from the 2008-2009 season. A specialty grower is defined as having at least 200 natural wood logs in production or some commercial indoor growing area, and $200 dollars or more in sales. The average price per pound received by growers, at $2.56, is down 48 cents from the previous season. Volume of sales of Shiitake mushrooms totaled 6.32 million pounds for the 2009-2010 season, down 33 percent from the previous season. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.75 per pound, is down 44 cents from 2008-2009. Sales volume of Oyster mushrooms, at 5.78 million pounds, is up 14 percent from the previous season. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.55 per pound, is up 9 cents from the previous season. Volume of Sales of exotic mushrooms, other than Shiitake or Oyster, is 3.17 million pounds, up 1.81 million pounds from last season. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.18 per pound, is down $1.96 from 2008-2009. Certified Organic Agaricus and Specialty Mushrooms Growers produced 30.0 million pounds of mushrooms that were certified organic during the 2009-2010 growing season, 28 percent below 2008-2009 of 42.0 million. Out of the 30.0 million pounds, 17.0 million pounds, or 57 percent of the total were sold as certified organic mushrooms, while the rest were sold without the certified organic label. This compares with 12.4 million pounds, or 30 percent sold as certified organic during the 2008-2009 crop year. Agaricus mushrooms accounted for 74 percent of the mushrooms sold as certified organic, while all specialty mushrooms made up the remainder. The total certified organic sales of all mushrooms represent 2 percent of the 2009-2010 total mushroom sales. The number of certified organic mushroom growers totaled 51, up seven growers from the previous season. These growers represent 16 percent of the 312 total mushroom producers. ACCESS TO REPORTS!!
