Survey definitions and procedures as well as a copy of the questionnaire used are located in the back of this report. The first multi-State Nursery Production Survey revealed that 2000 gross value of sales of nine categories of nursery products totaled $3.32 billion in the 17 selected States. Deciduous shrubs and other ornamentals accounted for 23 percent of the total sales dollars, followed by broadleaf evergreens at 18 percent. The top three contributing States were: California, 28 percent of the total; Oregon, at 15 percent; and Florida, with 14 percent. All nursery operations with sales over $10,000 totaled 6,535 in the 17 States. Those firms with sales of $100,000 or greater numbered 2,714 while those with gross sales over $1 million totaled 681. The State with the largest number of operations was Florida with 991 firms. Oregon had 867 and North Carolina rounded out the top three with 698 growers. The 6,535 nurseries reported production area of over 16 billion square feet, or just over 369 thousand acres. Oregon growers utilized 60.4 thousand acres, Michigan accounted for 56.0 thousand acres, and Pennsylvania reported 34.2 thousand acres. Part-time hired labor was utilized by 3,956 operations or 61 percent of the nurseries with sales of at least $10,000. The average number of part-time workers per operation was 13.6. Full-time workers were hired by 3,740 operations with an average of 15.5 workers per operation. The nine nursery categories surveyed were: broadleaf evergreens, coniferous evergreens, deciduous shade trees, deciduous flowering trees, deciduous shrubs and other ornamentals, fruit and nut plants, Christmas trees (cut and to be cut), transplants for commercial truck crop production, and propagation material. Deciduous shrubs and other ornamentals accounted for $772 million in gross sales during 2000, or 23 percent of the total. Plants included in this category were buddleias, hibiscus, hydrangeas, lilacs, other deciduous shrubs, ground covers, other vines and ornamentals. California growers sold 33 percent of the total followed by Florida, at 28 percent. Oregon operations accounted for 9 percent of the total sales. Broadleaf evergreen sales were the second largest category, at just over $593 million, or 18 percent. This grouping includes azalea, boxwood, euonymus, holly, magnolia, and other broadleaf evergreen plants. Twenty percent of the gross sales were based in California, 15 percent from Oregon, and 12 percent from Florida. Deciduous shade tree transactions totaled $406 million, or 12 percent of the survey total. Trees included were ash, birch, honey locust, maples, oak, and other deciduous shade trees. Oregon sales accounted for 25 percent of the total dollars. California sold 15 percent and Florida 13 percent of the total. Coniferous evergreen sales totaled $403 million, or 12 percent, of the 17 State total. Arborvitae, balled and burlapped Christmas trees, cedar, fir, pine, and other coniferous evergreens made up this category. Oregon sold the most, at 21 percent, California, 15 percent, and Michigan, 9 percent. Propagation material or lining-out stock was the fifth largest category with sales of $349 million, or 11 percent of the total. Propagative material included root stock, lining-out stock, seedlings, tissue culture, and other propagation. The largest percentage of sales were in California, with 29 percent. Florida measured 17 percent while Washington and Oregon tied for third place with 11 percent each. Fruit and nut plant gross sales totaled $299 million, or 9 percent of the total. This category included citrus and subtropical fruit trees, deciduous fruit and nut trees, grapevines, other small fruit plants, and other fruit and nut trees. California sold the majority share, at 73 percent. Oregon and Washington rounded out the top three with 6 percent each. Deciduous flowering trees accounted for $233 million of gross sales, or 7 percent of the total. Types of trees included were amelanchier, ornamental pear, crabapple, crapemyrtle, dogwood, redbud, and other deciduous flowering trees. California handled 20 percent of the total gross sales. Oregon and Tennessee were next largest at 18 percent and 12 percent, respectively. Cut and to be cut Christmas trees accounted for $149 million, or 4 percent of the total sales. This breakout included douglas fir, fraser fir, scotch pine, white pine, and other varieties. Oregon led gross sales with 38 percent of the total. North Carolina sales earned 26 percent of the market with Michigan accounting for 16 percent of total sales. Transplants for commercial truck crop production recorded gross sales of $120 million, or 4 percent of the 17 State total. Transplants included broccoli, cabbage, peppers, strawberries for commercial production, tomatoes, and other transplants for commercial production. California led the category with 64 percent of total gross sales. Florida and Oregon rounded out the top three with 14 and 11 percent, respectively. It is meant to supplement the more comprehensive Decennial Census of Horticultural Specialties. Seventeen States were selected for the survey based upon sales reported in the Census of Horticultural Specialties. All known growers in the surveyed States with annual sales of at least $10,000 were included in the survey. The nursery statistics presented in this publication are compiled from the Nursery Production Survey, a copy of which can be found on pages 30- 37 of this report. The survey format and questions were developed with the assistance of industry leaders. The questionnaire was then pre-tested with producers to refine the format. Nine nursery plant categories were selected for this survey. These align with similar groupings in the 1998 Census of Horticultural Specialties. They are broadleaf evergreens, coniferous evergreens, deciduous shade trees, deciduous flowering trees, deciduous shrubs and other ornamentals, fruit and nut plants, cut and to be cut Christmas trees, propagation material or lining-out stock, and transplants for commercial truck crop production. The determination of whether the plant was evergreen or deciduous was based upon the area of production, i.e. a plant, such as an azalea, may be an evergreen in Florida while the same plant in Connecticut would be deciduous. Questionnaires were mailed in January 2001 to all known growers with at least $10,000 in annual sales. All qualifying operations were asked production area, full- and part-time labor, and gross sales. Producers with at least $100,000 in sales were asked to provide additional data, such as number of units sold during 2000, gross sales dollars, and percent of total sales which were wholesale. January 1, 2001 inventory information consisted of number of trees or plants on hand and their value. Sales intentions of the inventory were divided into four periods percent of expected sales in one year, two years, three years, or four years and later.
