HDR1012000110060331971500Peanut Stocks and Processing Released March 31, 1997, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Stocks estimates refer to February 28, 1997; all other data are for the month of February. Peanut Stocks Down 11 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.93 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 2.18 billion pounds last year. This total includes 1.12 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 739 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 71.6 million pounds. There were 43.8 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of February 28, 1997. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 556 million pounds of which 523 million pounds were edible grades and 33.3 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 127 million pounds; Runners, 349 million pounds; and Spanish, 46.4 million pounds. February millings totaled 289 million pounds. Millings by type were 63.5 million pounds of Virginias, 202 million pounds of Runners, and 22.8 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 107 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during February. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 60.4 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 26.5 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 17.0 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 35.8 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2,840,259 pounds of peanut butter, and 98,640 pounds of roasted peanuts during February. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand February 28 totaled 1.66 million pounds, compared with 620,000 pounds on January 31, 1997. Of the February total, 1.25 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 386,000 pounds were Runners, and 22,000 pounds were Spanish. January stocks of treated seed included 512,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 86,000 pounds of Runners, and 22,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (3-97) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms.
