Stocks estimates refer to May 31, 1997; all other data are for the month of May. Peanut Stocks Down Slightly From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.24 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.25 billion pounds last year. This total includes 265 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 894 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 84.2 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of May 31, 1997. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 672 million pounds of which 633 million pounds were edible grades and 38.6 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 124 million pounds; Runners, 465 million pounds; and Spanish, 44.8 million pounds. May millings totaled 240 million pounds. Millings by type were 45.2 million pounds of Virginias, 192 million pounds of Runners, and 2.95 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 117 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during May. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 60.8 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 29.8 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 23.9 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 29.4 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2,287,088 pounds of peanut butter, and 146,790 pounds of roasted peanuts during May. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand May 31 totaled 11.7 million pounds, compared with 25.6 million pounds on April 30, 1997. Of the May total, 2.96 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 6.98 million pounds were Runners, and 1.79 million pounds were Spanish. April stocks of treated seed included 7.83 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 17.0 million pounds of Runners, and 784,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (6-97) Table 1. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
