Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to Sept. 30, 1997; all other data are for the month of September. Peanut Stocks Up 25 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.15 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 922 million pounds last year. This total includes 772 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 364 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 12.3 million pounds. There were 51.4 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of September 30, 1997. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 273 million pounds of which 267 million pounds were edible grades and 6.7 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 43.6 million pounds; Runners, 201 million pounds; and Spanish, 21.8 million pounds. September millings totaled 111 million pounds. Millings by type were 20.2 million pounds of Virginias, 88.7 million pounds of Runners, and 1.91 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 134 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during September. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 65.3 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 35.8 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 29.8 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 15.5 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 4,709,727 pounds of peanut butter, and 107,352 pounds of roasted peanuts during September. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand September 30 totaled 177,000 pounds, compared with 202,000 pounds on August 31, 1997. Of the September total, 109,000 pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 37,000 pounds were Runners, and 31,000 pounds were Spanish. August stocks of treated seed included 124,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 47,000 pounds of Runners, and 31,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg (10-97) Table 1. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation.
