Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to February 28, 1998; all other data are for the month of February. Peanut Stocks Down 1 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.91 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.93 billion pounds last year. This total includes 1.16 billion pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 700 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 48.9 million pounds. There were 2.65 million pounds of Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of February 28,1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 526 million pounds of which 506 million pounds were edible grades and 20.3 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 111 million pounds; Runners, 354 million pounds; and Spanish, 42.0 million pounds. February millings totaled 316 million pounds. Millings by type were 66.5 million pounds of Virginias, 238 million pounds of Runners, and 11.7 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 113 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during February. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 59.6 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 28.8 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 21.6 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 30.4 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 2,512,643 pounds of peanut butter, and 253,206 pounds of roasted peanuts during February. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand February 28 totaled 6.26 million pounds, compared with 984,000 pounds on January 31, 1998. Of the February total, 1.43 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 4.80 million were Runners, and 31,000 pounds were Spanish. January stocks of treated seed included 916,000 pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 37,000 pounds of Runners, and 31,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg (3-98) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms.
