Peanut Stocks and Processing National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA Washington, D.C. Stocks estimates refer to March 31, 1998; all other data are for the month of March. Peanut Stocks Down 3 Percent From Last Year Peanut stocks in commercial storage totaled 1.67 billion pounds of equivalent farmer stock, compared to 1.71 billion pounds last year. This total includes 833 million pounds of actual farmer stock. Shelled peanuts on hand totaled 788 million pounds of equivalent farmer stock. Roasting stock totaled 48.7 million pounds. There were no Commodity Credit Corporation uncommitted stocks on hand as of March 31,1998. Shelled peanut stocks totaled 593 million pounds of which 572 million pounds were edible grades and 20.2 million pounds were oil stocks. Edible grade stocks by type were: Virginias, 122 million pounds; Runners, 399 million pounds; and Spanish, 51.0 million pounds. March millings totaled 342 million pounds. Millings by type were 73.8 million pounds of Virginias, 245 million pounds of Runners, and 22.5 million pounds of Spanish. Commercial processors utilized 117 million pounds of shelled edible grade peanuts during March. Utilization for all peanut butter products was 59.8 million pounds, utilization for peanut candy was 31.3 million pounds, and utilization for snack peanuts was 23.2 million pounds. Crushing for oil, cake, and meal totaled 48.6 million pounds during the month. Deliveries under the Government Domestic Feeding and Child Nutrition Programs amounted to 1,845,856 pounds of peanut butter, and 42,606 pounds of roasted peanuts during March. There were no deliveries of peanut granules during the month. Stocks of treated seed on hand March 31 totaled 20.4 million pounds, compared with 6.26 million pounds on February 28, 1998. Of the March total, 5.61 million pounds were Virginias and Valencias, 14.7 million were Runners, and 32,000 pounds were Spanish. February stocks of treated seed included 1.43 million pounds of Virginias and Valencias, 4.80 million pounds of Runners, and 31,000 pounds of Spanish. Gr Lg 6 (4-98) Table 1. These Statistics are collected and presented according to the Peanut Statistics Act which requires shellers, crushers and processors of raw peanuts to submit periodic reports for their operations. These reports are usually based on a complete enumeration of all shellers and crushers and all of the larger processors of raw peanuts. However, reports are occasionally received too late to be included in the first tabulation. Allowances are made for these missing reports and revised totals are published in the next report. 1/ Excludes stocks on farms. Includes stocks owned by or held for account of CCC in commercial storages.
